Maybe I am showing my ignorance here since I have never actually used a grip, but how would it improve AF speed? I thought the grip was just for larger battery capacity and better access to buttons in portrait mode.

I'm in the same boat. Does not make any sense to me. Maybe it is easier to focus due to the grip orientation.

A grip improves AF speed? Never heard of that. That's like saying an air filter boosts a car's Horse Power by 100

Only if you have the fuel line magnets in conjunction with the air filter.
