Once again I captured a visitor to our home. This time a Helophilus Trivittatus Hover Fly (Male). This guy was a large one. Almost as large as the Drone flies that seem to have invaded our garden.
Having captured it within a glass, I once again set to providing a small droplet of honey on a sheet of white paper. Placing the glass over it, I waited about a minute before the hover found the honey and gorged itself. Firstly a cheeky little shot in the glass. ![]() Then a variation of shots. Sorry there's so many but when you have such a compliant subject, you take liberties. ![]() The next two, you can see a couple of droplets on the eye ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This one I took as a typical entomology study book style shot ![]() And this final shot was taken with two extension tubes (can't remember which ones) ![]() |

Beautiful captures Ian, i like the idea of capturing it in a glass first. I must look into some extension tubes as this is the kind of detail i'd love to get. I have a 2.8L macro, so what would your recommendations on tubes be.

Thank you all for your kind comments
Mat, I use Kenko Extension tubes. They have the electrical contacts to permit auto-focus if needed and also fit very well. You can get really cheap tubes but often don't have the contacts, sometimes you have to force your aperture into a specific setting before using and often they fit badly letting light leak in or even pulling causing the camera to error. The only shot I used the tubes on is that very last one and it wasn't at full mag. I could have gone closer |
