Yea I hate links also but it was the fastest way to post.
Bird feeders turned out to be a part time job, this might also, I'm afraid to start. |

Alternatively you can try a butterfly nesting box. Lower maintenance.

How about that, butterfly nesting box. I looked it up and does exist.
About the time you get all the creature comforts set up a plane flys over and dumps skeeter kill all over everything. Then you wait to see what else disappears. Hopefully just those #*@! skeeters. |

I assume that you're in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area here? ('Cause I'm wondering what the outcome of this will be myself, it don't look too good for the critters) Randy |

Depends on what they spray. I don't know of any Mosquito-only insecticide, but pyrethrin-based insecticides are fairly safe (for everything but insects) based on the little info we have about it. Still that's a lot of potential biomass loss for the bigger hungry critters.

Randy I'm on the east coast, I did live in Abilene while at Dyess for a couple years. I even heard one news cast say it would especially target the west Nile carrying mosquito.
Sounded like some BS to make people think there was no reason to worry. When they start talking out their rear, you know they are trying to cover up something else. Well a good thought is they done it at night, so it will probably be a fast acting contact type of poison. If at night was to keep it off people tho, that's a bad thing. |

We'll see how it goes, they have sprayed already part of Dallas on Thursday night, but due to rain, they had to stop after 2 hours. (Instead of the planned 4) They did another spraying last night, (Friday) I have not heard any about that yet. One older man was on T.V. last night saying that he had already lost one friend, and two others were in the hospital, that says a lot right there on how bad it is.
I still see nesting birds too, so that ain't good, I don't know about butterflies, but to me, that spray is not going to just kill mosquitos, I heard them say it will kill fish. So... We'll see the outcome, it's a little late to stop something that's already a done deal. I'm worried about the food chain 'from mosquitos up' in the animal world. The chemical they are using is, "Duet". Randy |

Duet apparently is a "synergized" synthetic pyrethrin mix. It breaks down to sunlight exposure but does carry some know toxicity risks. Pyrethrin-based insecticides are generally considered the safest of all insecticides but there is no chronic affect data for exposure to them unfortunately. The food chain will certainly be affected to some extent. Species of insectivorous bats would most likely take the biggest hit as each individual eats their own body weight each night out on the town.

Exactly my point Adam.
That's what I was worried about, bats, the whole thing, it makes me kind'a sick really, but, since we're at the top of the food chain, I guess we win... I appreciate the 'facts' that you have stated, I had no idea that you were up on that kid of stuff, it's nice to know that there's smart people on here. heh Oh well, we will see what happens, I don't know who all else is spraying with this stuff, or any stuff for West Nile, but I hope it doesn't come back and bite us. Thanks Adam, Randy |
