I'm wondering why people don't consider the 135 f/2 for indoor sports? Is it simply because it's within the same range as the 70-200? The 70-200 f/2.8 is only good indoors if you've got a camera that will perform well with ISO's upwards of 1600 or so, so I'd think that the extra stop would help quite a bit in terms of noise.

A great help to lower light shots would be a monopod and IS in a lens. There are a lot of dog show images which can be captured while the subjects are either completely still of moving just slightly. Therefore, you can use a longer shutter speed as long as your camera is stable. Just choose your shots according to the shutter speed you can achieve. Frankly, I have never been very keen on images of the handler walking the dog around the ring...
Most of todays DSLR cameras can capture images just fine using ISO 400 and many can go above 400 and get good imagery.

Sorry, haven't been on in a couple days.
I've since upgraded to a 1D MKIII, so should have much better high ISO performance now. I do still have my 70-200 f/4, but got a great deal on a 24-70 the other day and intend to try that out at the shows. The 135 f/2 would most likely be too much for most of the shows I go to. Sometimes even with the 50mm we'd have to stand way back in order to frame the shot properly; and then you have to worry about people walking in front of you. Best to be able to sit/stand right by the ring, which is why I feel that a zoom is most appropriate.

Yah, us gators stick together. The 85 is much better fast focusing than the 50 - you'll never miss a shot with the 85... and the IQ is good enough to crop 3 to 4X with even moderate lighting. I shoot indoor HS basketball with mine. The only thing you need is enough length to get your shot.

i think you'd like the 85 1.8. it's a super fast lens and has amazing autofocus.
