are you on Mac? I heard pc is not ready yet
Since the majority of us do not have a 1DX, 5D3, or 650D - remember the simple means of avoiding this issue are: Turn your camera off first before putting the lens-cap on Alternately if the issue happens - its said you can quickly take your battery out and pop it in again - or - detach & re-attach your lens. (power off?) As of yet the issue has only happened 1x for me in 2 months, but having the power off when putting the cap is easy to remember.

I've had the AF stop working after accidentally pushing in the focus barrel.
You can fix it by using a soft lintless cloth and pushing it back out from the inside. I guess if the motor goes too far in, it stops working.

Sad panda for you. I got a great copy. Are you asking for a different lens or just complete return?

FWIW, I think the IQ is fabulous.
I don't know that you should judge the IQ based on a copy that you are returning because it was soft. I like pretty much everything about this lens except for the manual focusing. It is soooooo convenient. What body are you using it on?

I have to agree with Marm. the 40 is an amazing little lens and sharp as a tack and i also have to agree with the manual focus being a bit odd but not so bad that i would return because of it but still annoying though.

Ah.
The vignetting on full frame might bother some people. I have a crop and I don't notice it at all. The latest version of DPP (you might have to download the latest update) should easily correct any vignetting. I actually use manual focus quite a bit because I find myself shooting lots of product-style photography. I use live view magnified x10 and then manually focus exactly where I want it. This is the biggest shortcoming of the lens IMO but not enough to overpower the price/IQ/convenience of the lens. The AF is really acurate on my copy. Not lightning fast but definitely fast enough for most of my subjects. I have heard lots of compaints about the focal length. I haven't really noticed any problems with it... again, I'm shooting on a crop. YMMV.
