Cream of the Crop
|
Long story short: I come home from work tonight, and on the tiles around the pool, find a female Nursery Web Spider with a back full of babies! First time for me, though I've seen pics on this forum of Wolf Spiders carrying their brood. So I run into the house, and ask the wife, "Where's the camera?!" She had taken it to work this morning to take pictures of a coworker.
"Oh, NOooo, I left it at work; I completely forgot about it!" SON OF A BISCUIT! ![]() |

I think this calls for an excuse to get a second body, no?
Sorry for your loss! |

I wonder if any phone cameras have decent macro but i'm sure you are only interested in getting good quality close ups.

Interesting - not heard of nursery web spiders doing this.
Toby- there was a minor fad of using the lens out of old cd/dvd players as an add-on macro lens for phone cameras. Brian v.

I never knew whether they did or not, and this one is smaller than most adult NWS's I've seen. But when I attempted to capture her, she went jumping across the water to escape in the fashion of that species, so I'm certain that's what I have here.
I'll post pics, IF my wife remembers to bring the camera home today, and the spider cooperates. |

Update. Managed to get some decent shots, and could make out the eye pattern. Not a Nusery Web Spider after all; Wolf Spider, but very adept at moving across the water like a NWS. Who knew? Shots can be seen here:
