Default Just bought two lenses...

that I've been wanting for a while. Both are to be used on FF and 1.3x, but mostly FF.

40mm f/2.8 pancake

28-105 f/3.5-4.5 mkII

The zoom will be for street photography and the prime will be for fun/travel/when I want to go small.

You know what's funny? As I get further and further into photography I find that I need expensive lenses less and less.

Congrats on the 40mm. It is an awesome lens. I really didn't like the 28-105mm. My copy had a lot of CA and was really hazy/fuzzy wide open. I sold it really quick.

Hey, thanks Kawi.

Was your 28-105 the mkI or mkII? Regarding the CA, I convert 99% of my street images to B&W. Anyway, hoping it delivers satisfactory shots. I may have to report back on my findings...

I used the 28-105 back in the film days, I think I had the MK II version. I have the 24-105 4L IS now and it's a better lens in every way and I enjoy using it more (and I would certainly hope so given the price delta). Would be interesting to try the 28-105 again but I no longer own it.

IIRC, the mkII is supposed to be sharper than the 28-135 IS, which I used to own. If that's the case, I should be satisfied with that aspect. I'm not worried about lack of saturation, CA and the like. As long as I can get along with the AF, I think I'll be happy.

And yeah, the 24-105 is a fine lens, but it's overkill for me. Plus I like smaller lenses when I have a choice.

That wouldn't surprise me.

Lol. Yeah, the 28-135 is a good soft portrait lens @ wide open. Too bad it's f/5.6 at he long end.

Thanks, Bryan. It's always fun for me when I get a new lens - even if they're both under $200 - because I imagine the new capabilities they will bring to the table. Interestingly, I've not had a normal zoom for about 5 years, so the 28-105 II should be a lot of fun.

Thanks, Buff Guy. Not sure where I'm on my way to, but I think I'm getting there fast, lol.

Mine was the mk2. But if you are converting to B&W, then CA won't matter either way.

Well, I hope it can deliver (what is to me) satisfactory sharpness stopped down to f/5 - f/5.6. I plan on using it as a constant aperture zoom that way. If I desire a shallow DoF portrait I'll shoot a 105mm. If I want shallow DoF on an environmental portrait, I'll go with the pancake lens, otherwise at 28mm and f/5 or so I'll have plenty of DoF. At least that's the plan. And this way I'm not walking around with a $2000 rig on the streets. I'm not too concerned with robbery (though it is a real possibility with where I go and who I photograph), I have insurance for that. No, I'm more concerned with alienating my subjects; many of whom are dependent on the local soup kitchen and food bank.

If I don't want to walk with expensive rig, I never take digital FF. I have Rebel and OM Zuiko 28mm f3.5 for the street. 70$ lens. I'm also more and more into photography. And enjoying a lot, preferring it, actually, old, cheap film rangefinders and very cheap FSU primes. For the street. I like to take candids with RFs, not with DSLRs.

Hi Ko,

I strongly prefer FF for my street shooting, so I use a 5Dc sans grip. It's kind of big and fancy looking but at least it's not an expensive body. I don't shoot film (never have, really). And I'm finally making the switch to a zoom (mostly) for street. I've just missed too many shots in the name of having a fast prime "just in case" I need shallow DoF. I think I'll be fine.

Best,

Ian

Update:

I'm pleasantly surprised at the IQ of the 28-105 II even at 105mm f/4.5. Judging by the reviews, I expected less, lol. I think I'm going to enjoy this lens as my official "beater".

I have found out that I need expensive cameras less and less but put #1 priority on lighting with high quality lenses.
