I don't think that I've ever seen the price this low before.

therefore the dilema for me would be take advantage of the lowest price of the true & tested or be the first to beta test the mkII?

And the price is not 'hidden' in the cart! It is right out there in the open, and 'Sold by Amazon' too!

It depends on how much you're willing to spend on the MkII. Could be $2k!

If you will be able to afford that, I'd wait.

I'm hoping that it drops down to to $999 once the 7d2 is announced. That's when i'll strike!

Yes and that is my dilema.
I had a budget of 2k with a lens. But I am willing to sacrifice the lens if the gain in features are warranted.

I'd keep a close look at the price drop in any case.

this is of interest to me so thanks for posting.

Wow, down $300 from when I bought mine last year. It's a sweet camera with an awesome AF system and fast frame rate (8FPS).

Good deal indeed. I hope 7D2 is appoarching. But with the growth trend now favors the mirrorless interchangeables, I beleive we might see a lot of DSLR price drops. I beleive even the new models will start at the price point that can compete the mirrorless systems.

I just don't see a 7D II competing in the MIL segment. Two totally different technologies for 2 different markets. The MIL cameras will likely never be used for fast action sports/wildlife which even the current 7D excels at.

The 7D has been $1199 for a little over a week now. I've been dying to pull the trigger on the purchase but had to wait until Christmas to do so. Ended up getting $800 in Amazon gift cards. No brainer after that. :) The camera should arrive tomorrow. :)

I have yet to see mirrorless do anything for things which move. Maybe I am not in touch with what the mirrorless market offers.

I agree with you. The consumer DSLRs will begin to be canalized by mirrorless, but the 7D is not a consumer body, and targeted at sports and bird shooters. There is no mirrorless system anywhere near term in that market. The two big factors are autofocus speed and the preference to viewfinder shooting... Two major weaknesses of mirrorless that I don't see being solved soon.

I'm also debating getting one of theses or holding out for the II. Decisions, decisions.

Local Fry's got brand new one for $999. So $200 less for us in CA as Amazon charges us tax.

I agree what you say. MILs offering the action AF speed will be the worst nightmare of the DLSR industry.
But I bet it will happen soon. It could be as fast as the next year or 2014. Watch what olympus and Sony will offer.

For now DSLR still has it's advantage over the MIL for actions. But as the overall growth trend in the entire camera/photography industry favors MIL, the pricing power of the entire DSLR category might be affected.

When looking at market segment for a product (or line), companies do not only look at the immediate segment but also cross segments and, most of the time, they define bigger segments or expand segment to a bigger one over time to extend the product life cycle.

I am sure Canon doesn't want to sell a heavily invested prosumer/consumer camera like 7D only to sport or bird shooters. I am sure they also target people who wants a DSLR with better video taking ability or those who want a good all around camera. Let's not forget the 7D also was positioned for those who don't want to upgrade to FF (due to different reasons) as well as for the people who don't want to a Rebel or 60D because they apprecaite 7D's unique 100% VF, the hybrid VF, 19 AF points and/or the better weather deal at that time. How about people who want in-camera remote flash control?

It's hard to argue that most 7D buyers don't shoot a lot of actions, Indeed, most of the action shots a prosumer/consumer takes can be well taken care by 60D, a rebel or even a Nikon V1. And I bet more 7D buyers shoot static, travel, street, family, landscape, video more than sport. The true sport pros will use the 1-series.

Companies understand that buying decision is a result of more than just a single marketing position or a single feature. So, granded that 7D has the 8FPS and sport AF speed don't automatically make it exempt from the competition from the current MIL. Sure it is not the core competition yet but the pressure is on and it will be closer.

This is all because the current comsumer/prosumer DSLRs are chasing the same share of disposable money as the MIL systems chase after. THIS is where the real competition should be defined and is difined. Feature is only second priority to define the real segment a product is in.

Realizing the true potential buyer groups and the size of them is the most important task. Afterthat, language, promotion, pricing and straegies will be applied to differentiate that product/line from the rest within the well defined segment(s).

Anyways, I think there is a good chance that we might see more aggressive deals, more pormotions and even lower price point from the prosumer/consumer DSLRs next year... well again it's due that the growth trend now shifted to MIL, so the disposable money goes to MIL faster and more. So in order to compete, DSLR will have to adjust some of the 4P's.

Consolidation of product lines will/ might eventually happen (or it's happening) as the market demand of the DSLR might drop (P&S upgrader and second body buyers might seek for smaller body/system).

No arguement ...just some thoughts.
