This looks like a gem lens. I've been craving ultra wide but it's very hard to find for the 1D3 (because of the 1.3x crop and no EFS ability). The manual focus scares me a bit, but you guys have given me confidence.

Where are most of you finding the most reliable sellers? Ebay?

I got mine from Amazon when it was on sale for $320, it is only $350 there now http://www.amazon.com ...o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1external link

It is occasionally on sale at Buydig too.

For landscape shots, the MF is not an issue, you can just set it and forget it.

^ Beautiful!

I see BHPhoto has the lens for about the same as Ebay, but I wonder shipping this lens to Canada if there will be customs charges (on top of tax) because it's not a Canon lens (which is considered a USA product). I have bought lenses from BH before and shipped to Canada, only tax, no customs. Anybody have any ideas on that?

Also, I know the lens is MF, but will the cam's auto exposure and wb work?

for example - i use nikon version without chip (not work focus confirmation), and buy for some $ adapter Nikon->Canon mount from ebay with chip - and good work focus confirmation, exposure metering and etc.

How do you guys deal without the autofocus confirm? Is it bothersome or something you just get used to?

But without the chip, I know there is no focus confirmation, but what about exposure and white balance?

You have to set F stop and distance, everything else works automatically, just like any other lens.

Thanks! Just ordered from Adorama (BHPhoto was closed).
I got the Samyang for a bit more than the Rokinon, they are supposed to be exactly the same, but from what I've been reading there seem to be fewer reports of bad copies with the Samyang (just coincidence maybe?) Fingers crossed.

Good luck with that. I just received an RMA authorization for my second copy of the Rokinon from Amazon. Just a very disappointing experience. The first copy was laughable, with the right 20% of the frame truly a blur. The second was substantially better, but still had really weak corners with a bias toward worse performance on the right side.

Amazon claims they may remove the lens from their site temporarily while investigating the reason for my two returns, but we'll see. And of course B&H has to be closed the whole week. I'm close to just going for the Samyang there after they re-open, even though it will set me back almost $50 more after shipping (I have Prime on Amazon).

A few reviews have mentioned going through 4+ copies before lucking out, and I'm starting to believe it.

That sounds very strange. This lens has been out for a couple of years now, and it is almost unheard of for quality to go DOWN in a successful lens. I don't remember hearing problems like these...
One reason might be that the distance meter on the lens barrel isn't very accurate. If you set it to infinity when shooting things that are far away (which should be fine!) you are likely to have problems, because it's generally off. In fact, because the lens is so wide, when shooting something several meters away, the edges of the frame is likely to pick up things like the ground, walls, shrubbery (your feet!:)) that are much closer, and so may be out of focus. This is not because the lens is bad, however, just the user isn't use to this aspect of the lens. Just remember, the depth of focus on this is enormous! Unless you are trying to do close-ups of flowers or something, nothing should be out of focus (although field curvature may distort things near the edge). Just set the distance to much less than the distance of your subject. To repeat for the millionth time, if you set the distance at about 1.2 meters (4 ft.), at F5.6, everything from about 2.5 feet to INFINITY should be in focus. You can just leave it there and not worry anymore. I never worry about focus with this lens. For street shooting, I often don't even bother to look through the camera! I shoot from the hip, or just let my arm hang down and look off in another direction and click, click, click. People have no idea you are shooting them because you aren't focusing, and the camera may not be pointing anywhere NEAR them! It's so wide people almost next to the camera will still be in the picture. If you are shooting things close up indoors at F2.8, you will have to worry more about focus, but not too much more. Again, the DOF is giant on this thing.

I had no issue with mine, 1st copy was solid and I had the Rokinon. A few people have posted that they have had some bad copies, but it doesn't seem to happen very often.
