One of those little led lights, for the hair.

One thing I've learned from these photos is that the average room size in the US is MUCH bigger than the average size room in the UK!

I own a DSLR, some lenses and some lights.

Well at least your not living in Japan which probably has the smallest rooms of any country. If you had a place over there I think it would be impossible to create a studio unless you lived within it.

Just moved into my 500 sq. ft. studio space that I'm renting on the cheap from a business contact. I need some suggestions on decor and placement. The small area at the very left is 7' x 9', the duct work (my main complaint) is 4' x 9'. The area behind that (the corner) is 9' x 9' and I intend on using it for a client meeting area.

Feel free to drop your ideas/suggestions on how to best utilize this space. I've got a budget of ~$1000 for non-photography items. I've got a decent amount of lighting and modifiers, and I'm going to order a wall-mounted backdrop holder. I've got Thunder Grey and intend on ordering a black and a white as well, unless I can learn to better control my light spill.

Here's my studio at work, Rothman Furniture a large furniture retailer in St. Louis. The studio is in the warehouse, and all of the lights are CFL constant-lights in various soft boxes. sorry for the cell-phone shot.

some DIY flats could help out a lot, cost hardly anything, and don't take up much space. you can make them 2-sided black and white to act as large flags or reflectors. What kind of shooting do you plan on doing in there; portraiture, product, or what?

My humble loft. It serves as a play area for my girls during the day and a studio space at night.

Good idea on the DIY flats! I am in need of flags for sure - and my only reflector is a collapsible round 5-in-1.

I hope to start doing more serious portraiture and have already begun product photography. Right now, my aim is to create a comfortable & inviting area to meet my clients and show my work. I'm sub-letting the space from a local Real Estate Stager (who I shoot regularly for) and we plan on running many co-marketing days where I provide headshots for Realtors at a discounted rate (cluster shoot) and they showcase their staging abilities.

I'd like to start doing modeling work with a slight fashion edge but am intentionally staying away from nudes and boudoir as I edit most of my images at home and have kids.

if you're doing small product stuff, I don't see a product table anywhere other than that big wooden one. I would get something very flexible, or even a couple different styles of tables and surfaces you can swap out.
some big pieces of marble/tile/lexan/plexiglass with various surface finishes and colors would be good to keep a stockpile of for backgrounds, also.

Here's my studio space. I wish it was about 5' wider, but I've got just about all the depth and height I need!
