Its mid winter or so here in New Zealand and I've been out shooting a frame or two here and there in the cold dark depths of night. Heres a selection of the last couple of months.

Are photos #1 and #4 composites? The stars in the sky are sharp, but they are trailed in the water reflection.

Rob, when I plan my trip to NZ, I am going to have to make sure I end up somewhere close to you so you can teach me how to do those kinds of shots. They are simply amazing. You could do a book with those shots that would sell like crazy to the stars buffs here in the states.

Water has a habit of moving.. In one especially as there is a small stream off on the left.

These are all stitches, usually 16 to 24 frames, no composites though

POTN used to make coffee table books, and sell them.
You submit, editor(s) pick the "best" (or was it a user contest, I forget), and off to publisher it went.
I've not seen anything on those in 2-3 years at least.

MIke, thanks for the heads up. I was not even aware that this was something that took place. And Rob, it has been a dream for both my wife and I to eventually visit NZ. Our kids are out of the house for the most part (one left in college, but he has many years left due to the nature of the degree he is seeking) so we have bit more freedom and more money to do the things we love to do, like travel.

That first picture the water reflection has star trails but the stars are pen-point . The star trails are in a circular motion . What is causing the trails probably is from stacking those 16-24 frames . The fourth picture has trails also in the water reflection but they are straight .

Over all they are nice pictures . There is a slight projection of noise or slightly over sharpening . Are you using the noise reduction in your camera or any kind of DeNoise program ? One question that has always arose among everyone in editing is when should the Noise reduction be used , at first in PP or last in PP ?

I have discovered for myself that using your noise reduction first makes it much easier when editing an image cause since sharpening can produce noise in an image you can always tell how much sharpening needed before noise is re-introduced to an image . When using a DeNoise program always make sure your image is enlarged at 100% . This is where noise in most detected .

No, what is causing the trails is motion of the water due to a stream, as this unstitched/unprocessed single frame shows.

Sharpening is a mix of for facebook and flickr doing horrid things thesedays. I've not used any NR on these at all, I normally only bother when I print.
