This male Anna's hummingbird likes to sit on this dead branch of a rose bush. He spends a lot of time there surveying his domain and napping.

Sometimes (like today) he let's me take his picture.

Great shots! Love the nap shot! lol

I agree with bwfishing on this one. This should be a shot in a book showing the way the bird looks. It is fantastic.

Excellent shot Craig. Great job.

Thanks Peter. I was actually too close to get anything except the head shot.

That's a beauty of a house finch picture. They are an elusive bird to photograph in my yard since they are a little too wary.

Craig, how did you get that close to the woodpecker? Fantastic close-up!

Thanks. It was a combination of luck and not panicking.

He came to me. I was sitting in a chair a few feet from the bird bath trying to take pictures of small birds like this chestnut-backed chickadee.

IMAGE: http://troublebound.smugmug.com/Birds/Chestnut-Backed-Chickadee/i-bVppDrR/0/XL/CBCH57-8731-XL.jpg

The woodpecker came from behind me and landed on the bird bath to get a drink. I wasn't really surprised because I've seen him on the bird bath before and heard him calling shortly before he showed up. Being a juvenile I don't think he realized I was sitting there in the chair.

I was using my 70-200 zoom and the only shot I could take was of his head. I took just a few pictures before he flew off. The woodpecker picture posted above was the sharpest and was at 105mm. This was the first one I took and it was at 80mm. His crest was raised up a bit on this one.
