I'll start off another lens thread with an eagle doing a backflip.

Lovely pic, i had wondered how the 80-400G would fare on my camera, but DXO class the 70-300Vr and the 80-400G as being very close in image quality on my D90.

The extra reach helps but it always depends on the situation. Like most lenses, how you work with it will impact image quality the most.

Didn't get a chance to go out to the dam this weekend so I went through some past photos for re-edits.

How can you get so close to eagles? over here if a buzzard even got a sent of me or a sound it would be gone, the closest i could come to a buzzard was about 300 feet away then he saw me and flew away, you are so privileged and lucky.

I think it's about finding the right location. Here's one location that is about an hour's drive from my house. I found it because someone here on POTN talked about it.

You can see all the eagles in the trees across the river. I don't have to try to get closer, just have to wait for them to start hunting.

Another popular location is lock and dam 14 on the Mississippi. That is about a 2 hour drive for me but it's one of the more popular places in the US to get a photo of an eagle during the winter. People come in from all over the US to shoot there.

Here's a short video of Lock and Dam 14.

If you go out on the trails cover yourself from head to toe in camo. You'd be surprised how close you can get to birds when dressed right.

Your shots are really fantastic and super sharp. I'm seriously debating over which long lens to get for use with my D750. This is one of the few affordable (for me) nikon lenses with any length. I'm also debating the Sigma and Tamron 150-600 lenses.

Are you cropping heavily with this 400mm lens?

This second version 80-400 is supposedly super fast in focusing and has fantastic VR. Do you agree?
