V2 fun with the 70D. No ducks, but great BIF practice.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered one of these lenses from B&H. Not sure when it will arrive since it's showing as not in stock on their web site. Now I need to sell my Sigma 150-500.

I got mine in 48 hours, despite their "out of stock" notice.

Nope, not with the new V. II. Had several pieces of dust in my old V. I, but they didn't affect the images at all.

Let us know when it ships, my tax refund is just about to hit my bank & I'm hoping that tvphotog is right about the marketing thing. Patience is definitely NOT one of my virtues, lol!

Jay,
When you say "I downloaded the lens registration .exe and put the lens with and without the extender on the 5D3 and 7D...", how did you do it? I've spent hours trying to find an updated lens registration tool that includes support for the new Canon 100-400L IS II. What I managed to download from the CanonUSA web site still contains the old 1.10 Lens Registration Tool, which includes the old version but not the new version of the 100-400. Any advice getting the registration data for the new version would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

You have to get it from the 7D II software, don't ask me why. Go to www.canonusa.comexternal link, click consumer products/Cameras/EOS cameras. Go to the 7D II and go to the software button. Click to download the ksd291a installer, and hit Download. Enter any 12 numbers in the SN box and hit Submit and download the file.

Extraxt the .exe file and install the EOS Utilities 2 and 3 and the Lens Registration program (you have no choice but to install all three and you can uninstall the two utilities after if you wish). Plug your camera into a USB port with a mini jack cable in the camera body side port with the lens on it. Go to your Start menu, under Programs/Canon Utilities/Lens Registration tool and open it. It will automatically find your Mark II lens and put a checkmark in that box. According to Canon, the registration helps the body avoid vignetting problems, etc., with each particular lens.

It's a good idea to leave the lens reg program on your computer, to register new lenses on your bodies as they come out. If you can't figure the above out, call 800-OK-CANON and they'll walk you through it.

Jay,
Thanks very much. I had been doing exactly the same steps that you suggested, but not finding the new 100-400 in the list after downloading the ksd291a installer. However, I used the 800-OK-Canon number that you provided and got the problem quickly resolved with a late-night support call. The answer is that Canon currently has multiple versions of the EOS Utility and the Lens Registration Tool available on their CanonUSA site, which is causing some confusion (at least for me). Instead of downloading the Digital Solutions disc file, the support analyst told me to instead download the EOS Utility 3.10b installation file, which contains a later version of the Lens Registration Tool (1.21). I did this and was then able to select and apply the correction data for the 100-400 IS II.

I very much appreciate your quick response, which led me to the answer. Hopefully, this will also help some other new owners of this terrific lens.

Thanks!
Joe

I've not been giving this lens enough attention lately and I wanted to see how it mated up with the 70D-

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet but it's Lens Rental's tear-down of this new lens.
