Where can you get a Y 35 F2 for $115 The cheapest I have seen is $150 and most are over $200. Read an article somewhere about price gouging due to its popularity

It fluctuates daily. I saw it at $115 shipped the other day. The same thing happened with the 50 F1.8, it went from $50 one day, to $120 the next, back down to $60. Seems to have settled at $60ish, especially now that Canon has 50 STM's for $125. Amazon has the YN 35 F2 for $122 shipped which is still a very good price for such a lens at this point, since it's every bit as good as the original Canon one basically (maybe not built as well, but for $122 I don't expect more than decent plastic and some glass).

Very best,

Just got the lens in the mail. My initial reaction is this lens is mediocre. Seems really soft and the focusing is sketchy. What can you expect for $120?

I did no post processing in Apple Photos.

What else would everyone like to see for photo samples?

I'd like to see a similar shot at a higher SS but that looks soft alright. Would you tripod it and manual focus just to make sure?

Are you sure the lens isn't front focusing?

The window screen appears to get more in focus as it gets closer to the camera.

If you have the ability to make some adjustments to the MFA, it might be productive. My 50mm f/1.8 Mark I needed quite a bit of adjustment.

EXIF says he's got a 60D, so no MFA possible.

Try focusing with LiveView and see if that nails it. At least we'll know if it's front-focusing (badly) rather than being defective or just horrid quality.

Oh do I feel stupid... When I received the lens I took off the clear plastic protector from the back of the lens. Only now did I realize there were TWO layers of this plastic. Face. Palm.

And what a difference that makes.

Yes, that's much better! Still seems a bit soft though.

Agreed. Tv of 1/50 may have some bearing. The 60D is capable of much better.

Personally, if it front focuses (badly) I would consider it defective.

And based on your comment of two layers of plastic on the rear element, do I assume there isn't any rear lens cap?

Don't get the old 50mm 1.8 II. Get the new 50mm 1.8 STM instead. ($125)
50mm is a bit too long for your only lens on a crop camera.

I would also consider:

EF-S 18-55 STM
used EF 35mm 2.0
Yongnuo 35mm 2.0
EF-S 24mm 2.8 STM

This. Good advice.

While I can't speak to the Yongnuo - as I've no experience with it, the other three are seriously underrated, and very affordable options. The 24mm pancake is a little gem (shame it's not an EF mount). Love it! The ef-s 18-55 has a 10" MFD - which is closer than the 100mm L macro - if you're into close ups. And my non-IS 35/2 - purchased used for about $200 - is a personal favorite. I've never tired of using this lens. I keep saying that I'm going to upgrade my 35/2 to X/Y/Z - but it hasn't happened. Yet.
