Some thoughts:

For me, the starting point is that I like the music. Given that, and maybe an openness and interest for experiment you're ready to go. Jazz is a wide field with lots of variation, so you can find percussionists with lots of equipment and action:

Other variants include ethnic jazz, jazz-rock, cross-overs into reggae/hiphop.

Some musicians move quite a lot (see Stan in the first image of this thread), though that brings difficulties in poor lighting.

Often performers come forward to front of stage for their solos.

There is some unspoken communication between band members, which I find interesting, like the look in Matt PineBomb's photo a couple of posts above.

You can get the more introvert moments, like your own shots above; portrait photography of a kind.

Small venues, where you're close to the performers.

Groups vary from small to Big Band.

Little or no hassle getting permission.

Above all, enjoy & don't get in the way of the other people in the audience.

Jim Campilongo, pictured below, playing the 55 Bar, NYC. He's not strictly jazz. He doesn't seem to be strictly anything. Drawing from jazz, blues, country, and rock, his playing has an almost vocal quality to it. One of my favorites and a local. That's actually ISO 16000.

Hi Matt, the increased image size comes across very well. - Camera/lens combo works well too. I wish I could focus like that with f 1.8

Here's another from the 55 Bar, NYC. I thought it was a worthwhile inclusion due to the jazz violinist. This is the Melissa Stylianou (vocals) Quintet with guest Zach Brock (violin).

Thanks for looking,

Thanks for posting, Darrell

Great work with the focus/DOF

Just my 2 cents: I'd pare it down some more, cropping out the sleeve and the face above the mouthpiece.

That's a fun band. I've seen them a few times and once with Allen Toussaint.

Nice perspective in that first one.

Below is Jon Batiste @ MoMA NYC tonight--a favorite of mine in recent years. I don't think he'll be playing small clubs for long.
