Maybe I am waxing a little too enthusiastic! But honestly, I see so many people recommending/using BR sling straps, I think this is a truly inferior solution in every important aspect compared to the Cotton Carrier (with the exception of, perhaps, looking non-geeky!). [Actually, as an aside, even in the world of BR-style sling straps, I think the BR is a poorly-designed product relative to, for example, the Sun Sniper; but that is another story.]

Now, you mention kayak usage, and to be honest, that is one of the situations that I have not tried using the CC. On my kayak outings, the camera + lens is usually slipped into a dry bag between my legs (I use a SeaLine Zip Duffle (external link)) or sitting on a tripod. I think the CC-mounted camera would not interfere with paddling, but depending on the length of the lens, the height of the seat, the size of the cockpit opening, and one's physique (in particular, the relative protrusions of of one's tummy vs. one's chest), there might be some degree of difficulty/awkwardness in the seating position or getting into the seating position. I will have to give it a try next time I am out.

You are right, though, that this should be on another thread --- I only brought it up here because there was a discussion of carry systems for specifically this lens, and I just had a great experience in very rough conditions using precisely this lens + the CC. There actually is a long Cotton Carrier thread I remember seeing on this forum, so instead of starting a new one, I might end up reporting my experience there. Either way, as you say, should not detract from this great thread!

I don't think that you are too enthusiastic at all, I was just making a joke. :) I'm really glad that you brought this up about the Cotton Carrier, otherwise I would not have considered it, probably...

Yeah, the Black Rapid Strap (Sport) is O.k., but not an end-all to my particular situation, I'll still use it from time to time, but this Cotton Carrier is a lot better, for what it can do.
For me, the dual Cotton Carrier can carry two cameras, AND, I think I can use the side holster for my monopod if I wanted, it still may dangle, but that'd be an extra thing it could do.

I don't dry bag my stuff when I kayak, I am only going to be on still waters, and as far as stability, it is as good as it gets, while in the water, getting in and out is another thing. That is the only scary part for me. I made a PVC thing that allows me to carry my 1D mkIV and my 400mm f/2.8 lens, and they are heavy, it's really similar to the Cotton Carrier Steady Shot, it works, but talk about ugly. :) It is really stable, and protrudes out farther than the CC, and I was able to paddle fine.

Anyway, I need to shut up so I won't take this thread in a different direction. :)
(Please link to that thread about Cotton's stuff when you do write something about it though, if you can)

Thanks again though!

Randy

Another vote for the Cotton Carrier vest. I don't leave home without it (to parrot the old American Express commercial).

What a lovely image. A great combination of subject action, light and composition.

Anyone shoot travel, landscapes, weddings or portraits with this lens? I know it's a bit different than wildlife photography, but I'm curious to know if anyone else is shooting other genres. I just purchased this lens to supplement my kit and have more fun while exploring the outdoors / traveling abroad and road tripping locally. Very interested in playing around with compression and environment.

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot landscapes with this lens yet, but I did this occasionally with the original 100-400L. So, it is only a matter of time before the new lens will get used for such a purpose.

Here are a couple of beach shots - I guess they count as landscape . . .

Yeah I ended up with a 400mm and the 100-400ii doesn't get used like it should, alas I still think the IQ is up there with my 135 F2 and that is saying a chunk. I've always said that most will use the 100-400ii at 400, regardless it's what I had on yesterday-
