Use the window. Get that new flash off camera with a cheap cord. Shoot a lot. Take notes. It will be a learning experience for sure. Make the most of it.

This is shot in low light (almost none) and 1 yn560iii. shot with the canon 50mm 1.8 on a Canon 50d I also used a canon 18-55 "kit lens" the same night and got good results with it as well. I happen to like my 18-55 they are absolutely not useless lenses

Just my 2 cents

Check this video out. It is from Jeff Cable....

I knew someone was going to say that... it was a quick shot while playing around with a new flash unit... wasn't looking for perfection in this one.....

I do believe the 560 has a bit more power then the Canon 270 flash unit as well.

Dunno if you've done this or not yet, but eBay will be your best friend in this case. On avg an older speedlight or a Yongnuo can be had anywhere from $10-40. Add an umbrella bracket and either an umbrella-softbox, or large-ish umbrella (I assume you have stands), and some cheap Neewer/Ninja/etc triggers and you can have an ok set up for providing fill light for as little as $40. Add a second flash and modifier for another $30 or so and you're good to go. If you're using the speedlights off camera in manual mode (and you should really) then you can buy whatever. Nikon SB-24s go for $10-15 all day before shipping and work fine.

I suggest the yongnuo flash ok for the money (although I chose a used canon 430exii) and a vello off camera flash cord. If you are not going off camera, a total swivel head will be much more advantageous. Rogue flexible reflectors are great too.

I'm also curious about how it went. Hopefully well and we can see some results from the shoot.

The T3i will act as a master. As others have said, Yonguo is the beginners best friend. Get two flashes (eTTL compatible), some cheap stands and some cheap white umbrellas and your photography will grow in leaps and bounds. Even in TTL.

Check out the http://smokingstrobes.com/ (external link) site and YouTube videos. He shoots on the cheap.

Manual mode, f8, 1/200, TTL and see what happens. You'll impress yourself.

My all-time favorite flash modifier is a folded 3x5 card and a rubber band.

Return that 270 and get this: Yongnuo YN568EX II. Ten times the flash of the 270 in every way. You will not be disappointed.
