My raptor album is almost non-existent. So when I got to my Osprey site finally a sunny day, I had a pleasant bonus, my first Red-tailed Hawk. See them all the time in Illinois, but never got close.

Showing how he got his name-

Speaking of the look-

Always been an Osprey or two at this harbor-

Thanks for looking.

Wow what a great set Rog! They sure let you know when you're interrupting whatever they're doing!

Many, many thanks, Ian. Coming from a raptor expert means a lot. Now on to in-flite shots, hopefully.
Any thoughts on the hawk's prey? Black and white feathers-I wondered if he would take on an Osprey? Wouldn't think so. Certainly no unfledged young this time of year?!? So, guessing pigeon or Laughing Gull perhaps. Just curious.

Ha, I was going to ask you the same question. I was thinking gull too.

Thanks, guys, appreciate the kind words.

For ID of the prey purposes, an extreme crop that isn't too graphic. Note the pattern on the feather closest to the camera and on what looks like tail feathers in upper left. These are also somewhat pointed. But what really caught my attention is the black toe and talon in front of the hawk's right foot. Pretty sure that's not the hawks.;-)a Unless there's webbing not showing, rule out ducks and maybe gulls(?). So, ??

Love a good mystery. Sure it won't be for some of you. Thank you.

Grew shots Rog. I'm partial to the red tail since I get to see lots of ospreys. As for CSI Port Aransas I haven't a clue

You've got the light (sun) hitting it at a nice angle to accentuate the red color. Great shot
