Fantastic, MM. This looks to be an amazing combo. Isn't it just a tad heavy though?

At my age it's getting there, but how quickly before I'm bound to a tripod?
A monopod is going.
You may not know of my obsession with owls-
https://www.flickr.com .../albums/72157647823023723 (external link)
Well lately it's shifted to hawks-probably because that's all I've got in my area (that
is photographically possible) and they are such a challenge. I thought owls were the
challenge--my hawks, well they are another league in skittishness :)
So we fly out Thursday a.m.
Hoping for a Rough-legged hawk and bonus would be Northern Harrier.
Will it be a mistake leaving the 400DOii at home?
I am taking the 300/2.8 and the 100-400ii.
Poof likes the 100-400ii and the 300/2.8 will be for walking in the woods/shadows.
For the 300/2.8 I'll have the 6D.
So all is theory until we get there and shoot.
Hopefully I'll bring back something.
Don't know if it can compare with the Great Horned couple of weeks ago.....

Graham it's a good point.
Weight of the combo (without TC) is toward the photographer.
That minimized the 'moment arm' and consequent torque.
Not a long test but the Robins were handheld. I wasn't shaking :)
It is noticeably heavier than the DOii but 'feels' same as the 300/2.8.
Someday it will all get worse when I add the Xii.
Poof asked if I was excited about the 500, honestly I'm more excited
about the Leica 100-400 pre-ordered. It's going to Svalbard, the EOS
is not.

Thank you Carol :)
Poof told me to save the box.
She remembers when I got rid of a 120-300 because of weight.
There is a difference between front heavy lenses and back heavy...
this one tends toward the back.
Only time will tell I suppose.

I think we discussed this long ago.Yes the 600 would have been
even better but the 500 can go in the overhead or if have to
in front of my feet under the chair in front of me.

How's that for rational?

Traveling with it is not a problem mine goes in the overhead compartment all the time and I have the 600. Lenscoat even makes a collapsible hood that makes packing it when space is a premium even easier.
