Basilisk lizard, Costa Rica. The natives call it the Jesus Christ lizard because it can walk on water. I told it we can do that 5 months of the year here in Calgary, that's why it looks so skeptical.

I have been using a Canon 300 F2.8 L IS (wonderful lens) as my walkabout but, frankly, it is a bit heavy and I find that it tends to be in my backpack rather than at the ready in my hands. So as of Tuesday I am an owner of the 100-400 Mk2. I have only had the chance to do some brief test so far - but it is looking good/very good so far.
I was expecting a drop in IQ, which may well be the case, but I haven't noticed it so far - in reasonable light I am very pleased. I was not expecting too much in the AF speed department as the 300 is so fast - the new 100-400 is no slouch! Equal?
The only downsides that I have noticed is that the hood seems a little flimsy, slightly thicker plastic would cure this and only weigh a few grams more. The other is the twist zoom, I love push-pull/trombone zooms, however most people prefer twist zooms so Canon has to please the majority - I can live with that.
As a very new member of the 100-400 Mk2 club things are looking good:-)

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Tried it out on my 7D2 and these two are looking to be a great (so far) combination when I need mobility. Yes I prefer to use my 800mm and 1Dx but I am not walking far with that lot!
The idea of getting the 100-400 + 7D2 is so that I am not stuck in one place - reduction in weight will allow me to range much further and may even reduce my weight!
Hopefully I am off to your fine country in July, though nowhere near you as I am travelling to Calgary. The 100-400 + a couple of short zooms should cover pretty much all that I want to do and be light enough to go as "Carry On". Now all I have to do is con some of my relatives to drive me to the badlands, Rockies and Drumheller!

lol ..It is a super rig for anyone that likes to move, I'm on the ground , moving, on the go as I'm shooting and I just could not get it done any other way. I cant tell you how many times the guy with the super long lens wants to trade for a bit lol. Of course everything has its place. My bush is very close so the 800mm would be hard to use for 90% of what I shoot. At times I find 100mm to much and wish I had a 70-200 on !! But if you can get your 7DII and the 100-400LII set and maybe even the 1.4III its a super rig that will get you so much great stuff that it will be common place to see all of the critters around you referred to as pets lol

The hood is not flimsy, it is deliberately semi-flexible to deflect/absorb shocks should you drop the lens or ram into something. Most lenses also have a break point to reduce damage to camera and lens should, say, the whole rig on a tripod topple over, or your dog takes off with the neck strap between his teeth, or your daughter kicks the rig down a flight of marble stairs, or you got so excited having just captured a gold-warbled titwit, you forgot your rig on your car roof and drove off. You know, protection against every day occurrences..

Many people dislike the hood on the 100-400LII, There are many that do not like the door and have taped it closed,.. But to each his own. Mine wear's a lens coat so it does not constantly open on me, I think everyone has seen the video and has there own opinion.

I really like my 300L F4 IS which has a built in hood. Best thing ever. Too bad I hardly use it these days.
