I would love to get into air to air photography, the trouble is I don't know any pilots well enough to break into that field.

I'm trying. I've been a pilot for 25 years and that's just because I couldn't get my license until I turned 17. I was flying with family way before that. I've always just been an amateur photographer to document my adventures. Recently though, a guy started charging people for photos that I would personally trash if I took them... and the pilots were happy to have them. I realized they just didn't know what to expect and any picture of their plane was better than what they had.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm the best, far from it, but I felt like this guy was actually ripping them off and it inspired me! Even though I'm a pilot, I will be letting other pilots fly me so I can focus on the photos. We'll see how it goes!

Based on these results, I'm guessing it will go fairly well :) Really nice job on the full disk prop blurs, and getting the pilots actually IN the image...heh.

As I said I have not done any air to air, but I did once have someone demand to know how I got to shoot air to air with an RAF Typhoon after they saw these shots of a 6 Squadron FGR4.

They really needed a lot of convincing that they were actually ground to air shots. A realy good display pilot who knows how to show a plane off will often help you get what many confuse for air to air photos.

Thank you! We were flying around the lake and I'd already told him we would take a heading into the sun. As we turned, I suddenly saw the prop light up and said, "That's it! Hold that heading." Then after shooting for awhile I told him I needed to see his face. I'm shooting very slow shutter speeds and doing my best to hold the camera still with the wind buffeting me, etc. I never went over 1/80 and even went as low as 1/50 on a few shots.

Then the most important part... we landed and I had a couple of beers because I needed to calm down. I was like a kid in a candy store!

Shots one and two show some of the most beautiful lighting I've seen in a while - great time on that and thanks for sharing.

You did everything right, and it shows! Nice job!

I still remember the first time I tried air-to-air, thinking a fast shutter speed was better.... WRONG. The best shots show a prop blur at least 50% complete, and heading into the sun shows the pilot best.

Your shots are fantastic! To be honest, I'm a little bit jealous - but in a nice way ;-)a
Air to air photography has always been a dream for me.

Full circle prop blur but yet razor sharp! Before I read your description I thought you may have used some gyro-stabilized setup.
