The DOF is insanely thin at 500-600mm - many of us have joked about the learning curve we needed for this lens... like getting BIF wing-tips in focus when they are close... lol

I came from 300mm where f/7.1 usually gave me wings in focus (herons, osprey, etc.)... and a shutter of 1250 was fine to freeze the flaps,... now compression and all these other physics variables come into play.

but you had 500mm so not so much a curve for you

Truthfully the 50-500 OS was more like...450-ish, its a reason i sent it back, Doing side by side with the 100-400 there was NOT a big difference between the two lenses..

This thing? Holy crap its long, I have had to back it off a bit a few times here or there to frame things right.. One reason i really like zooms for wildlife...

I will likely use it more at f/8 or so than f/6.3 unless i DESPERATELY need that extra 2/3 a stop..

Also debating on if i want the 7D Mark II or the 6D now...

7D, 600mm, even at F8 and with a subject distance of about 60ft. You're looking at a DOF of about 10 inches.

Depending on the size of you're subject and if it's in flight, not a lot to work with.
Back button focus with Servo mode and squeezing off 3-4 shots at a time is about the only way I've been lucky enough to get some reasonably sharp images.
Especially if it's a small bird darting in and out of MFD. Which is even thinner.

The autofocus is really snappy with the firmware upgrade.

Yeah at first i thought my copy might have slight front focus then i realized no, part of him is in focus and the rest isnt in the DoF, it still might FF slightly, and i mean SLIGHTLY but i revised my initial opinion after looking closer at multiple images.. f/8 also looks tack sharp

Also the light got low but there was a dove on the wall in the backyard, ISO3200 yielded f/6.3 and 1/80 at 600mm, Figured why not.. and the shots are perfect with me just resting against a window frame.. So this things OS is a beast

No post processing on the 100% crop in the corner. Lens has not been calibrated with the dock and no MF adjustment in the camera.

A friend let me use his Sigma 150-600 C for part of a Lacrosse game yesterday. It was a little slower to grab focus than I am used to with my Canon primes (not a big surprise) but once it got focus it kept it. This photo is from a sequence of this guy running toward me. I shot about 20 frames and they were all in focus. I'm impressed.

Does any one use 5D markIII with this lens for flying bird, if yes
Please give me some sample picture.
the reason I am asking, I want to upgrade my camera to full frame.
I want to use only one camera for wedding and wildlife photography.

Jimmyt, I do have a 6D, known for lesser BIF focus speed capability than 5D markIII.
Even so my 6D is fast enough to capture BIF, the last firmware upgrade for this lens (update only possible with the Sigma dock), it is even more faster.

In my opinion there should be no problem.

What a great capture this is, with the moon as background as added bonus, very nice.
Is there any reason why you used f20 for this shot?, because to my knowledge this will make the photo softer because of lens diffraction?
To my understanding the f8 and f11 should give the best (sharpest) results, leaving more room for lower ISO/faster shutter speed.
