The fox den that I followed last year seemed vacant, with just the odd sign of life, as if maybe one fox was visiting from time to time. But today I dropped by, and as I arrived, one adult fox was just disappearing into the den. I sat down to see what might happen, and almost immediately the male fox arrived carrying a large rabbit, which he thoughtfully, he thought, dropped into the den.
1.

2. Like any male would, he felt naturally quite pleased with himself.

3. However, the female had other ideas. Apparently she felt the den was cluttered and crowded enough, and she immediately came out of the den, dragging the rabbit with her. Here's Mom removing the rabbit. Look at the look of total disappointment on the male.

4. The male took off, and the female stood and watched as he did....

5. Then Mom called the babies out. It may well have been their first time outside, they didn't even see me there, being focussed on each other and Mom.

6. The babies aren't even red yet, they still have a chocolaty brown colour. They'll turn red a bit later.

7. I saw 3 kits. There may be more, but that's all I saw.

8. Mom is tired from bringing mice already. She took a breather as I sat there.

Thanks very much folks! It was a disppointment thinking the den was empty, and a real thrill to see the new family. :) . Now if I can watch the second den I've found as well, it will be a good summer!

Ha, the rabbit stayed just outside the den for a late meal. I left when the babies went back underground and Mom was resting. Thanks for commenting Sandy,
