Used! I was the cleanest copy I have seen. It has one tiny speck of dust on one of the inside elements in the corner. An a few very tiny paint chips on the barrel by the switches.

Airbutchie, welcome to the club. I have had my 500 f4.5 for 15 years now and it is still my main lens when it comes to birds and wildlife. The pictures that it gives me are sharp as nails! Over the years I have often considered upgrading to one of the newer 500's, but most of my photography is done on a tripod, or on a bean bag and I do not think IS will benefit me to a great extent. I am now on retirement and I cannot justify the expense of a new lens, so my trusty old lens will therefore just have to keep on going.

I am curious, your gear list indicates that you once had a 500 f4 IS. I presume that this was sold along the way. Why then did you go and buy an older lens without IS?

Regards, Tony

Thanks for the warm greetings, Tony!!! I can't wait to give this glass a true real world run-through... I'm sure it'll perform admirably...

With regards to the 'IS' version, yes I did have it in my inventory... Got it for an amazing price, at the time (2010)... But didn't really use the glass at its full potential because my photography workload isn't what it is today... With that, I sold it a few months later and made a decent amount in resale (I purchased it at a much lower price)...

Fast forward 6 years later, I'm involved more in the sporting photography field and started searching for a 500mm/600mm lens... Came across several possible prospects (both 'non-IS' and 'IS' versions of each focal length) and found a 500 4.5L at a great price... Did my research, knew what to expect, and understood the pros/cons of acquiring this glass... I made a counteroffer to the listed selling price and the seller accepted!!! Woot woot!!! Couldn't be happier and the seller was just a wonderful person to deal with...

Anyhoo... That's the backstory of the 500 4L IS (bought/sold) and the new story of acquiring the 500 4.5L... Again, thanks for the warm welcome!!! I'll be posting here soon!!!

:D

Airbutchie! Congrats on the 500mm F4.5 acquisition! I've only had mine for a few months and I can't put it down.

More sample images!

Do any of you guys/gals use TC's with this glass? 1.4x or 2x? Canon, Kenko, or other brands/manufacturers? J

:)

PS. Vulture shot is crazy good, Jason!!!

I have tried a canon 1.4x teleconverter but was unhappy with the image quality, and for some reason the auto focus didn't work when using the 1.4 X converter with the canon 7D.

Hi Airbutchie. I have the Mark I versions of the 1.x and 2x extenders, which of course were introduced at the time of the early big white (non IS) lenses. I am reasonable happy with the results that I have achieved with the 1.4x on my 500 f4.5, but not happy at all with the 2x. As a result, the latter does not get used very much. Attached are two pictures, the egret landing on a log and the mother duck and ducklings, which were taken with my 1D Mark IV and the 1.4x (Mark I). I then purchased a new Mark III version of the 1.4x to go with my 70-200 f2.8 IS II. In conjunction with the 500 f4.5, I think it is a bit sharper than the old Mark I version of the 1.4x. The third attached picture of the Blacksmith Plover was taken with the 1.4x III. All three pictures taken at ISO 800. The autofocus works fine with the 1.4x TC's on 1 Series cameras, but of course will not work with the 2x TC. (Some people advocate taping the lens/camera pins to overcome this problem, but I have not tried this.) Regards, Tony.

Airbutchie. Here is the third picture, that should have been attached to my reply above. For some reason, it would only allow two attached images. Regards. Tony.

Jason/Tony... Thank you so much for your input regarding TC's... I do appreciate the info... Hope to shoot something interesting this coming weekend... Either at a wildlife reserve and/or surfing event here in Southern California (USA)... Again, thanks for letting me know about the TC's...

:)
