I didn't know any of these photographers, but the one in the middle spotted himself on my flickr photostream.
We became sort of flickr friends and hope to meet up some day.

This is interesting to me. It appears you took a photo of a newspaper photograph. How does copyright law apply to this? Doesn't either the photographer or the newspaper own the rights to the photo or is it okay to post a photograph of a photograph?

It is interesting, and I'm unsure of the answer. It may fall under the category of fair use depending on a number of factors. The purpose is for commentary--arguably educational in contrast to a commercial purpose. It's clearly not presented as an original work. What is the status of the original copyright.

In an era in which news publications in electronic media invite the public to do the EXACT SAME THING by embedding sharing links for freely reposting to facebook, twitter, etc., how does that effect identical content in the print media?

As a practical matter, printed news outlets are dying, and would likely treat it as fair use. A telephone call to the publication might easily obtain permission or might result in a knee-jerk denial.

I'll also point out that your quote also republished the news scrap in question.

Let's wait to hear whether the photo of texkam's sister was taken by, uh, her brother.

Since he merely posted a photo of a object he presumably bought and now owned (a newspaper) I don't see a problem.

There's no issue here folks. He took a picture of a a public news article and did not pass it off as his own.

Cheers,
