Showing the 'cropability' of the a77ii with the 1995 Minolta 400 APO. First the original size-not the same pic but within milliseconds of each other as 10 fps in the same sequence; then one cropped (better focus) from that same series-

I shot my father-in-law's black belt test last night--he's 70!

Overall I was pleased with how the A77II performed, especially given I was shooting at 6400 with it. The Zeiss 24 f2 ZA at f2.8 focused fast and provided me with satisfactory IQ for that high of ISO. The only thing is that I shot it and my a6000/FE55 combo at f2.8 against it at ISO 3200 and it was night and day. Lots of tweaking with the files on the A77II, almost none on the A6000. Again, I was shooting a stop higher on the A77II and I feel my results were very comparable to what I could expect out of my old 60D at ISO 3200.

If you would like to compare the results, I've posted the pics from the A6000 in the A6000 forum.

I suspect that if I had Medicine Man's DXO 11 Elite software that my images would have stacked up well with the a6000, though. I keep waiting for the price to fall at Adorama and it doesn't seem to be happening.

They look fine to me Mickey.
What about DXO Optics 10 versus getting 11??
I've not upgraded, probably won't unless I'm confused....the Prime is what I was after anyway.
Now image the a77iii :)
p.s. I'm still in Panama. The RX100v has been a constant companion around the neck, even for several days in
the dugout canoe BUT
No adobe update yet on my little laptop and I cant view the raw files :(

Wait, you have 10 and not 11? What you have is great, and what I want. I'll see if I can get a copy of that, maybe.

Man, I bet you are having a blast out there! I'm excited to see what you come up with.

Minolta colors/rendition hard to beat, even if the lens is circa 1995

World class image, MM!!!

Is the 400 4.5 hanging with your 400 DO for IQ and performance?

Won't lie about that Mickey. The 400DOii is in another class, as it should be since I paid
almost 3xs more for it. The Minolta wins on wize/weight/weildability plus we know about the color
flavoring it gives an image.
I read somewhere that the Mino 400 APO is sharp yet soft and I can understand that now.
No regrets mind you and having a 5Dsr I'm in the camp that believes a large dense sensor can
help 'lesser' lenses. Not that the Minolta is 'lesser' but compared to the 400DOii it is; so the a99ii
just might help make it shine more.
Regardless the Mino became instant love the moment I saw the little metal box it came in :)
Now where I'm going to puzzle is when a trip comes up with the a99ii and I have to decide between
the 70-400Gii and the Mino APO. When Poof and I have shot side by side, her with OMD M5ii + Oly 300/4
and me with the GX8 + PL 100-400mm, I've often gotten the shot because I can find it wide then zoom
in.
As far as robustness the Mino wins hands down. Def. built for the ages.

I know the 400DOii has served you really well, and you're right--at that price point it better out-punch the old Minolta's behind! I will say this about your long-range birding images--it is very rare that I find a dropoff from one image to the next. There is a continuity there--post-processing and your shooting, I have to assume--that makes it very difficult-to-impossible for me to tell which system you've shot with. There are times when I'll see a characteristic, and be able to guess what lens you've used but it sure isn't a majority of the time.

That darn 400 4.5 is calling me, but I keep telling myself I don't need it. I'm going to be in Tallahassee for quite a bit of spring football season, and I would be able to get some access to the intersquad FSU scrimmages if I wanted. All of my shooting would be during the day, so I think my Minolta 200/ 2x TC would be pretty good for that. I keep finding them on Japan eBay in the $1700 range near-mint with the snazzy metal case. Similarly, I've found the 300 2.8 HS for even cheaper--but I've heard that the 300 doesn't quite live up to the 200 or the 400--strange if true, no?

Dude, A99ii coming to you in short order--how exciting is that? There are a handful of us that are going to be living even more vicariously through you than usual because you'll be in possession of possibly the best all-around DSLR-style body on the planet.

I was wondering when the 70-400gii vs 400 APO showdown was going to come. Throw the Tammy 150-600 into the mix and that's the collective cat's meow for long A-mount glass.

Mickey you bring up another dilemma :(
70-400Gii vs Minolta 400 APO vs Tamron 150-600......problem is the Tam150-600 a-mount is the first gen.
With the a99ii coming (and an EOS M5 and an Oly OMD M1 mk II) I don't want to buy yet another Tamron :(
I do have an EOS 400/5.6 on the way for the M5=high hopes but I know the history of the M series so it is with caution.
We're covered with mFT lenses but I do need to add a couple of m-mounts for the Canon.
1st world problems eh :)
Well I've already read up on the AF points and the a99ii.
The 70-400Gii is the only one that will enjoy the majority of the a99ii's AF system, and if I didn't already have it the a99ii
woudn't have been ordered.
But I think you're going to be spot on, that the a99ii will be the best of all of the big boys--including the 1DXii...now that will be a shoot
off if ever there was one. Here is one from last week in Panama with the 1DXii at ISO 16K-
https://www.flickr.com ...0939595591/in/dateposted/ (external link)
I want to see the a99ii beat that (I think it will :)

You and your big-boy lens problems! :)

Unfortunately, I created some problems for myself by leaving my 2xTC behind for my visit to Tallahassee. Not a huge deal, but there were a few spots where it would have been great to have it.

Here are a few I didn't have to crop.

Thanks MM!

I took them at the Tallahassee Museum, which is the biggest misnomer ever. It is really part nature preserve/part Florida History museum/part zoo for indigenous FL critters. Taking pics of them in captivity of course makes it easier, but that Red Wolf and FL Panther were REALLY close--very cool. There is also a Jaguar, I think, but he was off-limits this day.

I sat in the gallery for the day-one of the swearing in of the Florida State house and got a chance to use the A77ii, A7R and RX100ii--either that day or the day after.

I was on the floor the second day, but only used the RX100ii as to not be intrusive. Will prolly post those tomorrow in the RX100 forum.
