I managed to take a couple of portraits of different Great Blue Herons on our Thanksgiving, Galveston Island trip. The first is a juvenile bird, very tame and very close. This image is essentially the entire sensor, handheld, out the SUV window. I always try to remember to shut off the engine for this kind of shot, pretty sure I did that this time.

The next image is an adult bird, from Bolivar Peninsula, just by Rollover Pass. I had to hike around him to get the proper sun angle and then remove my extender to get the entire bird in the viewfinder (scary stuff, handling all that glass and my 7dii, in the sand dunes. Made me wish for a vest). This is only very slightly cropped. I think the lovely yellow flowers may be Prickly Leaf Dogweed, whatever, I think they look fine with the Great Blue Heron.

I saw the little lady Chaffinch again in the park. I'm truly amazed at how comfortable she is around me. Here are two more shots of her. Light was a big too harsh (and I could actually use the 400/5.6) but the sun is now so low in the sky that morning and late afternoon it is blocked by the buildings of the city and the tree-line of the park and I have no light, so it's either shooting during midday or not shoot at all and that's no option. I get very unhappy if I can't go out and shoot birds.

Your midday light was great for this bird.

This Grey Wagtail was catching flies and kept returning to the top of this weir. A very pretty little bird.

Thanks very much, OhLook. The thing is that the front of the female Chaffinch is rather pale looking and the midday sun shining on it didn't do it much good. First shot where she is turned away from the sun is therefore better than the second, I think, but in that shot the bird has a deep shadow of a nearby tree across its back and that's not good either. Not that I'm complaining though. It was a real pleasure to spend time with this bird. :)
