Just realised the shutter speed 1/40 @600mm handheld, amazing OS on this lens.

great owl shots, what a fantastic bird this is, you are lucky to have these around, I still hope to capture one here in The Netherlands, but that is very difficult.

It was in my back yard so around 4 meters under poor light

Got lucky on this one, I was shooting just one on the branch, and all of a sudden in my viewfinder another fly's in, feathers every where till they settled down

I've not yet used this lens when mounted on a gimbal. I'm confused as to whether to enable OS.

You should turn it off. when shooting something that's fairly still you can see the OS moving in the viewfinder, it did once make a screeching sound till I switched it off. Although sometimes I used the mode 2 panning setting when swinging around shooting something fast. The OS is a gyro so counterbalances movement in the lens, if the lens is still it's got nothing for it to work against. I get blurry pictures with it on

Thats interesting as my lens sometimes makes the same noise, i was wondering if it was the IS mode causing it.
I would add that if you can get sufficient shutter speed so as not to get camera shake and give you the desired speed then IS is not needed.
