My local Canon supplier, from whom I've bought most of my gear, has recommended the Sigma to me instead of the Canon (see title for lenses).
I was a bit surprised as this is the first time he has steered me away from Canon, but he's really impressed with the Sigma.

Do any of you have any experience of the Sigma v the Canon? I would love to have your thoughts/recommendations.

Thanks

Three areas the Canon would beat the Sigma: Less size, weight and price. Otherwise the Sigma beats the Canon everywhere else

Let me see... Retailer is recommending the $959 lens over the $349 lens. Yep, the Sigma must be better! Why else would he say such a thing?

I've had Canon 50mm lenses: I, II, 1.4 (twice), STM. I paid $89 for a refurbished STM. So far, it is the best of the lot.

Sorry Tom, made a mistake, I was thinking about buying the Canon f1.2 and he recommended the Sigma f1.4 which over here is £1,100 v £500 - even I would've smelled a rat if he was recommending one double the price!

That leaves me out. I've never used a 50L or 50A. Of the lesser models, I think the STM is easily the best.

The 50L muddies the water a bit. Do you want 99% of Otus IQ or do you want the dreamy look of the L wide open and potentially (the Art is not guaranteed to be any worse however) more consistently accurate AF?

There are many discussions on this topic, I have read a lot and then I bought SIGMA ART.
And 'one of my favorite lenses, not the weight, but to the three-dimensionality that is able to express. And 'one of the sharpest lenses I have in the kit.
But I think Canon is still a little advantage for precision autofocus, but I often shooting in manual focus.

Between Canon 50mm f1.4 and Sigma Art or non Art, Sigma all the way. Much better in everything. Had Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon f1.4 and Sigma 50mm f1.4, at the same time.
