Some great shots in this thread. I recently purchased this lens and think it's fantastic. Have only used it around the house and back yard so far but am impressed with the image quality and blown away by the autofocus speed and accuracy paired with an A7ii. I previously had a 6D/50mm STM combo and I don't think I'll ever be looking back now. Hopefully I'll have some worthy shots to show here soon

Anyone here have experience with the Sony E 50 1.8 vs this lens...FE 55 1.8. I have the cheaper 50 which is for APS-c only. It's fantastic for the price. Really, The IQ is very good and totally acceptable. That said, it's equivalent to 75mm on my a6500. For a good number years I have been a 35/85mm kinda guy on the 5d3 (Which I no longer own). I think I'm noticing the slightly shorter FOV of the 75mm equivalent 50. I'm considering switching to the FE 55 1.8 mainly for the 82.5 FOV on my a6500 which I'm sure I'd prefer (the 75 seems just a tad short). Question is this.....does anyone think I'd notice much of a difference in IQ with the 55 one the 50? Seems like a bunch of money to spend just for a slightly longer lens, but if IQ will be better I'd be more inclined to invest.
Thanks

I have no experience with the e 50 1.8, but I've heard it is a great value lens.

What I can tell you, is that the FE 55 1.8 is the best lens in the 50mm range I've ever used--better than the Sigma 50 Art. It is its equal in most every regard save aperture, which hasn't been as big of a deal as I thought it would be. What has been a big deal is the weight and size savings I've experienced swapping out my trusty 50A for the FE55.

If I didn't own an a7r, I'm not sure I if I would pay the extra money for the FE 55--but I sure am glad I have it. I use this lens on my a6000 for portrait, sports, landscape and as a general walkaround lens outside when I know I'll be shooting in space.

I bought my lens like new for $700, but I've seen it in the $500 range a few times used (banged up a little in one circumstance).

I can say that the FE55 is durable, as it took a tumble once with the hood on and the metal casing saved it. The concave design of the lens is, IMO, a nice touch..

Here are a few of my favorites with the FE 55. 1,3 and 4 were taken with the a6000.

Thanks for the info Michael. If I can find a real good price on a used one in great shape I'll pull the trigger. As it stands the E 50 I have is amazing. Just wish it was 55! Nice shots BTW!

I was in the same spot when I had the EF100 f2 when I shot Canon. I really liked it, but was very intrigued by the files I saw from the 135L. I upgraded and loved the 135L during one of Canon's really good refurb deals, but there was always part of me that knew the 100 f2 really was good enough to keep delivering shots I could both use and enjoy.

Found a nice deal on a clean copy of this lens. Should be here later this week. Looking forward to having closer to 85mm (35mm equiv) on the a6500. I've also really grown to love the rendering of the Zony 24mm. Hoping this lens will have similar results!

Ha Ha! 48 hours was enough for me to realize the differences between the FE 55/1.8 and the E 50/1.8 are negligible at best. I think it's a great lens for someone with both APS-c and FF Sony bodies. That way it can be used on either camera. However, for a person like myself who is only shooting the crop a6xxx, I think it's better to go with the cheap APS-c 50/1.8 (which is fantastic BTW) and put the extra $ toward another lens (the FE 85 comes to mind). So, off it goes to a lucky FM'er!

Interesting. Don you think af speed is similar on both?
