Went out to the Riparian Preserve near me and even though it was overcast, I got some good images. I enjoyed this lens the more I used it. Too bad it has to go back to Canon today.

Haha, thanks so much! Honestly, it was just a very trusting bird from a high angle over dark water. The trail at this state park follows a levee through primarily marshland (despite everyone's insistence that it's actually a "prairie" :p) so the angles on anything near the trail are pretty steep. I walked up on this heron only a yard or two from the trail and sat with it for 15-20 minutes or so waiting for the rain to blow in. I've started shooting a lot more with a tripod and gimbal lately, which really helps me slow down and snap off several types of shots instead of just trouncing around with the run-n-gun attitude I sometimes fall into. This was one where the bird quickly twisted into an odd angle and I happened to be pointing at the right spot, haha.

To get an idea of how close it was, this is a straight-out-of-the-camera shot at 100mm (here you can also see the wind just rocking his hair cut :) ) :

They must take turns on keeping an eye out.

Probably could have raised the shadows a touch but it was a dreary drizzly day.

First chance to get out with this lens and go for a hike. Somebody was keeping an eye on me.

I had the chance to shoot owls for the first time yesterday. They are interesting creatures!

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/owl_3.jpg

This isn't tack sharp, but I appreciate the beauty of the bird.
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/owl_4.jpg

This is a 100% crop. I'm still amazed at how good the 100-400 II + 1.4x III is even with a tight crop.
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/owl_5.jpg

And there was a heron nearby...

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.
