I would choose the following...

Why...

Me? Two Gridded Striplights. Lots of control and infinite variety of lighting on a subject by rotating it on axis. Remove the grid and diffusers also...

Or maybe one Gridded Striplight and one Gridded BD.

How about you..?

Nikons, Rolleiflexes, Elinchroms

I need hard light, soft light, and creative options. Two modifiers: medium fresnel, large china silk.

Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.

A fresnel and silk is a pretty smart choice, especially if it has barn doors. But is is a bit on the heavy side.

I like the Elinchrom Deep Octa a lot. It gives a variety of options (you can remove one or both diffusers and you can toss in a deflector disk). It is also pretty light and portable relative to size.

Given two modifiers, I might go with the 70cm Deep Octa and the 150cm Indirect Deep Octa.

C&C always welcomed...
On my images, of course, and on my words as well--as long as it's constructive :).

I love the Elinchrom Indirect 150cm and am planning on adding a Mola Demi with grid.

That's tough..

Today I'd say an 86" parabolic umbrella with outer fabric and a gridded 22" beauty dish.

The big umbrella gives the biggest, softest light that I use surprising often. Not readily mobile but extremely valuable in how I shoot. I broke one, bought another.

The gridded beauty dish can give me hard light, soft light & directional light. It's beautiful portrait light and it's tough enough and small enough to take abuse on say a beach shoot.

Perhaps an Octabox and a BD, both with grid.
Or a BD with grid and some DIY diffusion panel/reflector.
