Man I love Yongnuo... they are really taking advantage of the market and I like it, great competition. I may have to look into this thing. I would imagine it's a loud gear motor focus, which is annoying, but I could ignore it if it's sharp wide open. Would be a fun beater lens.

Very best,

If its decently sharp and has good bokeh, I may look into picking this up. It seems like a good bang for your buck lens for people just getting into portraits.

The $170 initial price will likely end up around $120~140 too. That's an outstanding cost if the optics are up to snuff, and historically, the YN 50mm F1.8 & YN 35mm F2 have been optically very good with good bokeh too. The cost savings come from the all-plastic build and the gear/wire (whichever it is) focus motors which are not super fast and are sort of loud. If you can tolerate that these days, they're excellent bargain lenses.

I will have to really see/hear how this one is, because for about $100 more, you can get the Canon 100 F2 used, and have USM speed focus.

Still very interesting.

Very best,

I have the EF 100f2, and it may be my favorite lens for what I do. If this is a direct clone with similar performance, then it would be a great buy. I'm curious about the AF though, the fast USM on my lens is one of the reasons I like it so much. And yeah, mine was only $270 used, so this isn't quite the bargain it might seem.

Yeah, no kidding! The Canon 100mm f2 is so doggone cheap, it wouldn't seem to make any sense to go with a 3rd party lens.

I had the Canon Yongnuo 50mm lens. Wasn't good, AF was terrible and the build quality was horrendous. IQ was ok, not even as good as the 50 STM. Since those two costed so similar, wasn't worth buying the Yongnuo.

I just bought the Yongnuo 35mm F2 for Nikon since there is no 35mm lens for Nikon less than $200 (for full frame). AF is not bad, not as good as my 50mm f1.4, but not too bad in poor light. IQ is actually good, almost as good as my 50 1.4 in my very limited testing and poor light. Build quality is much better than the Canon 50mm version. I actually wanted a very lightweight plastic lens since this is going to be for video work on my glidecam. So far seems to be a great option for Full Frame users who don't want to drop the $400+ on the Nikon 1.8 FF lens.

*One note however. I first mounted the lens and it hunted, simply would not catch focus at all. I was about to film the hunting, so I took the lens off to test my 50 1.4 to make sure that it would catch focus on the same subject. It immediately caught focus, so I swapped back to the Yongnuo lens. Went back to focus on the same subject and it instantly caught focus. I have read about this before. Every so often people have to remount the lens on the body to get it to actually be able to focus. I haven't used the lens much to be able to have it happen again, but as long as it doesn't do it often, it won't bother me for $94.

There seems to be a number of recent eBay listing for the lens now, starting at 199$

Wonder if this one is going to AF in live view...

Exactly, you have to manually focus both Sigma and Zeiss to get in focus shots. :p

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
