I keep thinking I'm going to stop posting eagle pics for a while, but then an opportunity presents itself for some decent shots. These were taken on a partially frozen bay around 4:30-5:00PM, so not quite golden hour, but the sun was low and behind me. It was bright enough that I could jack the shutter speed as long as I opened the aperture as much as possible. Love that late day light!

Now on to the pictures. Eagles are so graceful and powerful and can swing and loop so effortlessly in the air, but on the ground....well, not so much. And on ice, they're just comical.

Many thanks Greg. Well, the only thing holding me back from an 800 mm is the $17,000 cost :p

Thanks Bob. It's the light, really. I think I'll just stop taking any pictures before 4:00 pm.

Holy smokes Ian, those are prize winners!! I can't begin to get close enough or the quality of light you're getting on these. Of course I've only seen 8 total around here, most have moved on now.

Lovely..

Thanks very much Ron. This group of eagles lives here year-round, moving locally where they can find food. This particular bay is a good fishing hole when the ice goes out, so they're likely just hanging out to stake their favourite tree for hunting from.

Fantastic series. You just keep showing us brilliant images. I also feel like giving up when I see shots like these.

Ian,

What a nice set. You certainly make your ID X and 500 ll sing, that's for sure.

Thanks guys. I usually have to have the 2x extender on, or at least the 1.4x, when I'm shooting eagles, but for these I had to take the extenders off, they were so close. It's a nice problem to have, eagles too close :)
