You wouldn't even need another connector. The camera can already get information from the battery such as serial number. The external power source would just need a bit set that says "I'm an A/C adapter" and the camera could be configured to never sleep in that case. Just like you can tell a laptop to sleep in 15 minutes on battery or never on A/C.
That's a better approach, as it could be done with just a firmware change, assuming that the already-existing external power supplies have serial numbers or model numbers in their faux-batteries; if not, the adapters need to be updated, too, or a setting might be needed, to keep the camera awake if the battery does not have any identification.
The manufacturers could do a lot more in that whole department of recognizing attachments by model number or serial number, and making operation choices based on them, such as automatic f-number and shutter speed value ranges, based on specific lenses, instead of going into menus when you change lenses.
