We noticed red-winged blackbirds have returned to SW Calgary last weekend. Disappointed to see the Elbow Valley Constructed Wetland has been mowed down and the parking lot closed effective Apr 23 for ring road construction. Not certain if the city trims the cattails annually (didn't look like it last year) but we saw a few males on utility poles looking and sounding dismayed, perhaps lamenting the loss of habitat. Last year they were present in large numbers.
There was also a grove down the hill toward Griffith Woods that's been removed. Jays, and possibly kingfishers hung out there. The construction crew left the ad-hoc bike park intact for now. It'd be unfortunate for it to be bulldozed or marked off limits during construction, the neighbourhood kids have spent countless hours creating, maintaining and riding it.
Although ring road plans have been in place since at least the 70's it's sad to see these small sanctuaries for wildlife disappear.
Male & female from this spot last May.
