I'd say stick with it.

At first, the tightness of a 400mm (35mm equivalent) up close will be hard to work with but the more you use it the better you will get with it. I agree that it is too much for when they get very close but I have always been told to shoot sports tight and to crop your images even tighter.

For me, switching to a long prime helped improve my sports photography because I couldn't zoom out and create another full body, loose photo which was my tendency with a zoom.

The 7D + 300 F/4 is growing on me. Shot six games with it so far and my keeper rate is slowly going up. Doesn't focus near as fast as my old 70-200 2.8 II IS, but does well. The misses I blame mostly on my own tracking. Overall, very pleased with my purchase. Not sure if I'll even upgrade it for next year as the only fault I'm finding right now is the photographer!

Have you tried any night games? When you started the thread, that seemed to be important to you. Lighting varies a lot, of course, but I've never been happy with f 4.0 at a night game.

I'll add another vote for the Sigma 120-300 2.8. I have one that is a generation or 2 older, and it works great. The "fit and finish" are not nearly what Canon offers, but I saved a ton of money in comparison. I'm a little more tolerant of the lens cap pooping off knowing that I am a couple of thousand $ better off as a result. ;)

Night games were a concern, however the games didn't run as late as I had originally thought they would. There ended up being plenty of light for the time she was playing. I was really pleased with the 7D + 300/F4 combo, especially for the price I paid. I would've never thought I could've had such a capable kit for under $1k. She'll be in JV for at least one more year, so I'll be re-evaluating gear again in Spring 2019 :)
