So yesterday I was shooting for a few hours and with no problems and I put the camera back in the bag for about 30 min and I pulled it out to take more shots. Everything seemed fine, I changed the AF point, half pushed the shutter to focus in servo mode, the lens focused, but nothing when I when i fully pushed the shutter. The camera at that point was essentially locked up. I turned it off at the switch and it turned off, but the sensor cleaning didn't happen. I turned it back on and it was still locked up.

I ended up having to take the battery out and wait a few seconds. Then put the battery back in and everything was fine again. I was just curious if anyone else saw this symptom before a larger failure happened on the 7D or any other Canon body. Or maybe its just a one time thing for me and that is all there is to it.

This happened once with my 7D2 in Live View where the shutter wouldn't work, and when I flipped it to off not only did it not run through the sensor cleaning, but it didn't turn off! I took the lens off and noticed it looked strange, apparently because the mirror was still locked in the up position! I popped the battery out, put a different lens on, put the battery back in and turned it on and it worked perfectly. Have not had the same problem since despite using the same lens that was on when the issue occured many times. Hopefully it's just a one-off issue, it's been a few months and about 4000 shutter actuations since I had the issue so I don't even think about it anymore. Hopefully yours is the same.

I too once had problems of similar nature to this with one of my two 7D's. It would seem to fix itself, but also periodically did not function properly. After the camera finally become too unreliable, I had to send it to Canon for service.

What happens is the 7D has a very delicate circuit board for the battery interface, it's evidently easily breakable, esp. after numerous battery insertion and withdrawal cycles. The intermittency, good and bad, has to with flexion of this circuit board, where the failure mode is some kind of break.

You might consider having Canon look at the camera.

To this day, on my newer 7D Mk II and 70D, I now always slide the battery in gently from a horizontal angle, rather than letting it "drop" into place from vertical loading.
