The Cirl Bunting is on the RSPB Red Status list, The RSPB estimate there to be a population of only 850 birds. They can only be found on the Devon Coast between Plymouth and Exeter.

A survey in the 1990's showed that there were only 118 birds. Since then there are some very successful on-going conservation projects to help protect their environment that include the way the farmers farm their land.

They were not too difficult to spot, however, it mean't crossing a field with a number of huge Bulls that were blocking the gate and appeared not to want to move so I could pass. I decided to go for the long detour about a mile to get round them. It's not easy to run with a 500/f4 and heavy rucksack.

They are absolutely beautiful birds that are camouflaged very well.

Incredible light, composiiton, and subject. Well done. Love the late afternoon light (or is it early
morning??)

Thanks for your kind words. You are right about the light, this is late afternoon. (Prefer early morning light, but next to that comes the light at late afternoon...;o)) Time about noon = Time for a nab...;o)) )

Hairy's are a little bit bigger than Downy's and they usually sing before they eat while downy's don't. But other than that, they look almost exactly alike. Nice picture!

Yesterday somebody said the House Martins had arrived in the city so I went to see and shoot them. They weren't there. I waited for 2 hours or so and I shot some other birds. Like these house sparrows. These little birds are so comfortable around people.

Enjoying the sun. A juvenile: rubber lips and rather colourless.

This little Mallard was in the wrong spot, light wise (despite it being late afternoon). So a rather bad pic, but too adorable to not share.
