Continuing with my Blue Angels pics in my earlier post, those were all taken during the film era. These next two were taken back in 2009 with a 10.1mp Canon EOS XS (aka 1000D) and the much-maligned EF 75-300mm, albeit mine is a Type I, if that makes a difference.

The Blue Angels' C-130, affectionately known as "Fat Albert" always makes a spectacular exit when it takes off during the show. They used to use JATO rockets on the C-130 to give it extra lift, but there are no longer any JATO rockets left in Navy inventory, so no more spectacular JATO takeoffs. But! The Navy claims that, with this latest version of the C-130, the JATOs aren't necessary. It can do that spectacular climb out without them. Oh really?

Really!

Blue Angels standard flyby formation:

IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/aircraft/blueangels09a.jpg

Continuing now with jet aircraft, and the F/A-18, here's a shot of the Super Hornet. It's easy to tell the Super Hornet apart from the regular Hornet. The regular Hornet's air intakes are relatively small and rounded. The Super Hornet's intakes are very large and rectangular shaped. Incidentally, the Blue Angels fly the regular old Hornets.

IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/aircraft/fa18_super_hornet_1.jpg

When a jet aircraft is being put through a tight set of maneuvers, especially if it is a somewhat humid day, you'll see vapor puffs coming off its control surfaces. These puffs occur because of sudden differences in air pressure, where the water is forced out of the air. But the situation changes drastically as the aircraft approaches the speed of sound. Suddenly huge bursts will spring fom the aircraft, often almost covering it. This photo of an F/A-18 was taken as it was right on the edge of breaking through the sound barrier.
IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/aircraft/fa18_vapor_bursts_1.jpg

At the 2009 San Antonio Airshow, there was a perfectly restored MiG-17, which the pilot put through its paces.
IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/aircraft/mig_17_flyby_1b.jpg

There was also an A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka "Warthog") at the San Antonio show. In this pic, smoke from some pyrotechnics on the ground add drama to the photograph, reminding people of the awesome destructive power of this aircraft.
IMAGE: http://michaelmcbroom.com/images/aircraft/a10_1a.jpg

And lastly, a rare treat at the San Antonio show, the Air Force agreed to have a B1B do a flyby during the show. But that's all it did -- just a quick run down show center . . . at speed! It wasn't flyng supersonic, but I'll bet it was close to it. I was lucky to get off a couple of shots. This is the better of the two:

Shiny enough to do a good job of reflecting you in that shot. :p

Ok, we've recently seen lots of nice shots of the Blue Angels. How about the other guys? The US Air Force Thunderbirds flying F-16s? So, I'll lead off. I was alternating between a Canon EOS DSLR with EF 75-300mm and a Sony NEX 7 with Tamron 300mm f/2.8 LD-IF. These were taken at the 2015 Wings Over Houston airshow.

It seems like lately, every time the Wings Over Houston Airshow happens, I'm always out of town.
Within the past six years, the only one I remember being in town for was 2014. I work at Ellington so I get to see it all the time but, it'd still be nice to be in town for the show.

Excellent pictures you have.
Just out of curiosity, why does the one F-16 look blue? Is it reflecting the sky?

Retirement day of the Greek RF-4Es after 39 years of service and the end of 348 TRS after 64. A beautiful but also sad event in Larisa 110CW in central Greece. One plane had a farewell livery, one the special colours for the 60 years of the squadron in 2013 and the third the original vietnam camouflage
