Without those unsightly panels it has now

I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather.
Not screaming, terrified, like his passengers.

I've got In Laws in Shallotte which helped me find my way to Spencer. I don't know where in NC you are, but one of the best Museums I've ever been to runs a nice Steamer on short excursions. Check this out when you can:

I found if you go to the National New York Central Railroad Museum website. then click on the link there (click here to view The National New York Central Railroad (NYCRR) museum slideshow) (external link) in the slideshow you will see the unsightly panels were on the engine!

They should be there. Yes I prefer the look without the panels also.

Elephant ear smoke deflectors were applied to steam locomotives which had "soft" (low back pressure) exhaust systems that didn't lift the smoke away from the loco. They were commonly found in more modern (or modernized) locomotives with advanced-design exhaust nozzles. Otherwise the crew could get asphyxiated.

Our green hills are quickly turning "gold" after a few days of 80-90 degree weather. This one is from last week as an east bound intermodal enters Franklin Canyon on the BNSF Stockton Sub

Was this part of the reason for the big panels on some steam engines Cormac is referring too?

Interesting.....

Still unsightly. At least they had a goid purpose. However, they have no place in a museum
