I pretty much only use this lens with the 1.4x and 80D, the combo is a perfect focal length for the shots I find I'm taking. Bare lens is occasionally used when light is scarce, and at that point it's on the 5D4.

I'm again debating stepping up to the 500 f/4 II, but the light(er) weight and great results with this DO II make it a tough sell.

Female Orchard Oriole. I took a photo of her beau a few weeks back, but the Misses here has been very shy and secretive until today.

WANDERING GLIDER

I know very little about Dragonflies so I had to look this one, from my back yard, up on the web. I think I have the ID correct. I love that name, widely distributed around the world. I noticed what appears to be an egg cluster on the tip of her terminal abdominal appendage, during edit. Perhaps she was trying to attach it to the Yucca leaf. My thought was to get as close as I could and see how the 400DOii plus the 2xiii would perform as a sort of "macro" lens. I know it is not "real" macro, but it is what I have attached to my 7dii, most of the time.

Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised by the results. DOF is a bit thin, I was only 4 meters distant. These are hand held, center focus point, spot meter and very slightly cropped.

Nice job . when we are using 2x , F8 aperture also helps in getting more of insect in to focus. similar picture of dragon fly with 2X converter I have. Planning to photograph Butterflies in the next week.

American Avocet

I took this photo back in March, on our birding trip to Corpus Christi. Although I liked the late afternoon light and plan to use the photo in my 2018 BIF calendar, I was not satisfied with the 8.5x11 composition. Taking a page from Sanil's work, I re-cropped the original to a 5x10 view and get an entirely different feel to the image. The Avocet was a fair distance away, across Oso Bay from Suter Wildlife Refuge. This is about a 50% crop. I am thinking that a 10x20 canvas print might make a wall hanger.

Many great Bald Eagle images on POTN. I do not recall a more dramatic portrait of one, than this. What a print this would make!
