Would photo stacking help improve the overall clarity on images like this? I've never tried that before and was just wondering if any of you do it.

I have no answer. Now if you are talking about Focus stacking I do believe it would definitely enhance the quality. Just me thoughts.

I'm certainly no expert (ask my wife) but shooting at f22 may have caused diffraction which is softness caused by shooting at a too small an aperture.
I wonder if you had shot at a slightly larger aperture (f16), focusing 1/3 into the picture, on the near signs, you could have still gotten the light trails, stars, and dof you wanted. Also when shooting from a tripod, turn off the IS as I believe it will cause blurring.
On the other hand, you could experiment with the focus stacking and see if it will do what you want. I think it is best used when you have something very close

One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

Part of my problem along with the f-stop was that there was traffic giving some movement on the bridge.

I shot the Royals fireworks show after the game last night. It was my first real attempt with an SLR if you can believe that. I've never really tried before for some unknown reason. I blew out several lights. I tried shooting manual and also put it into tv mode to get some long trails. Any suggestions for me?

f8, and 4 sec is pretty common for fireworks. Probably help a bit with blowing highlights. That or take a separate exposure just for the background and lay in the fireworks in post.

The other thing I've heard is Bulb mode. I've never tried it (photographing fireworks) but want to some day. As well as the Milky Way. Someday.
