Like Mike, I went with the 24-70 II. I just received it from ebay 5 minutes ago! I was sweating bullets after spending $1200 on ebay...I don't even trust $50 purchases. But everything looks good; it's a solid, clean lens inside and out. After taking a few photos in my office, I'm thrilled!! I think I'll be fine without the OS...something I put a lot of faith in.
This leaves me with an even more difficult decision...keep or sell my 24-105 II? They seem too similar to keep both, but I've been using the original since 2006 and now ver. 2, it's hard to let go. But again, it just seems so redundant. I can't see myself carrying both of these bricks in a bag. Fine around home, but even then I have a feeling the 24-70 will stay on the camera.
I'm in that same position myself, but with the original 24-105L. For me, I think it'll go - if I'm constrained by size or weight, or want to look less conspicuous, or am concerned about damage or loss, I'd rather take a crop and cheap STM lens. If I'm interested enough in image quality to bring the 5D3, a few ounces or inches aren't going to make me bring a lens I don't like as much.
That, however, is me, and I'd never assume someone else should have the same priorities.
