dropped into local camera shop today to check out the sigma 14mm they just got in, long story short my mate made me an offer i just could not refuse

so without further adieu here is the brick wall test everyone's been looking forward to :P

leveled to the best i could and shot on a tripod, shot from UNDER 1m away from the wall (sorry i don't have a big enough brick wall to stand further back from)

raw ran straight through lightroom to export as jpeg with no adjustments

so my findings:

- auto focus snappy and accurate
- build is excellent, typical of what you've come to expect from an ART lens, has rubber gasket around lens mount for weather sealing
- some of the best focus ring i've experienced that's not named zeiss, nicely dampened and very smooth
- lens is SHARP wide open, sharpness only falls off at the extreme corners and i'd say quite evenly around all 4 corners, i'd rate very sharp up to past mid frame and sharp up to the edges and soft at extreme corners (possibly slighest field curvature?)
- vignetting not too bad, practically gone by f/2.4 (or "2.5" on canon body)
- handles distortion very well (as pictured), especially considering how close i was to the wall (again, under 1m), simple barrel distortion, i am sure non-issue out in the field

only thing left for me to test is coma, planning to head out in couple weeks time at new moon, hopefully will be putting up some astro samples soon (or just in my backyard when i get a clear sky lol)

but for now assuming you get a good copy i think sigma's knocked it out of the park with this lens

Thanks for the test.
Lens performance may strongly vary depending on focusing distance. Brick wall tests should be taken with a big grain of salt.

definitely! but on the other hand you could also argue brick wall test can be tortuous on the lens :P

but no the proof will be in the pudding when i do take it out for a proper field test particularly on the coma side of things which i obviously have not tested...wholeheartedly agree brick wall can give impression but does not tell the whole story

Just fyi the EXIF data displayed by the forum shows the photos as being from a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM @14mm.

you've already made up your mind it seems. report back in six months after the pink cloud dissipates and you've used the lens extensively in the field, please :-P

yea i definitely will don't you worry, there is a reason why i say "for now", next day i have off work and i get clear sky i will be out shooting, but then again i don't think it matters anyway as some individuals no matter what evidence is put in front of them just can not grasp or accept the fact that 3rd party lens makers can be as good or better than a canon equivalent :-P

oh and here is roger at lensrental's finding, more or less mirrors what i thought so far about resolution and minimal field curvature:
https://www.lensrentals.com …gma-14mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-art/ (external link)

i've done more snaps around the house and so far i can at least report that resolution is indeed very good, really can't wait to head out to shoot some MW now :-)

what canon equivalent are you referring to? you make a statement about homerun and then you say objective tests will follow. ok :-P

Get over it ed,
Your forum reputation preceeds you. If it isnt canon you just dont like it. I dont even know why you responded in this thread except to bash once again third party lenses.
The guy writes a review and gives some initial impressions and you got nothing good to say

First and foremost, thanks for the test photos. I'm always happy to see them and can adequately understand the limitations of the shots that people post. I'm going to be very interested in coma shots, if you get the chance, please post them up, I'd really appreciate it.

yea as i said based on what i've tested so far it's looking like a home run (which is quite a few aspects of the lens) but i still need to field test coma, what's so hard to comprehend about that? or do you only read selectively what you want to see like only canon makes amazing lenses and no one else is capable of anything decent? i can go through my on going issues with my 5d mark 4 and now my 16-35 f/4 IS but what's the point you're just going to ignore that anyway because canon is the bestest eva

you obviously have issues with 3rd party lenses (particularly sigma it seems), so why bother even opening the thread if it's something that does not interest you? do you feel you the need to defend canon as a company when someone comments they like a particular product over what canon offers? or are you insecure and feel that someone may possibly be suggesting what you own is inferior? i am truly curious coz every thread or post that praises a 3rd party product you seem to want to jump in and make a poorly veiled dig at whoever makes the statement, i'd say get a life mate but you know what good for you, whatever makes you happy, who am i to judge right?

no worries guys, i was little bit anxious myself with how little info's out there on this lens, i don't usually jump on something at launch so quickly but the "today only" price my mate gave me yesterday was just too good to say no and from what i saw playing around inside the shop i was happy with

i understand brick wall tests don't tell the whole story but it is also one of the easiest and objective way to show strength and flaws of a lens

but yea fingers crossed for clear skies next week where i can actually get some proper field and coma tests when i have day off

ok guys...came home from work and it's clear skies, this more or less just a preliminary test as i rushed this coz it's late and i am tired and moon is rising, just a quick and dirty test and edit in lightroom

shot in our suburban backyard

to me coma is very well controlled...it's there but it's minimal, perfectly acceptable to me, YMMV of course, the slight elongated stars is probably just star trailing but also noticing possibly just the smallest amount of field curvature, when i have time over the weekend i'll set up my tracker to test it again (hopefully clear sky and before moon rises), but this should give you some idea

added +40 to vignetting slider in lightroom and it looks good already, i made no CA correction

this lens is looking super promising to me now
