Great shot. In addition to the great shot of the subject I particularly like the matching yellow corners and the matching blue corners. Nice touch.

Would love some feedback on this. It is Hot Sauce in the bowl. One strobe light with a soft box back lighting. A couple of bounce cards and one flag to keep the bottom of the bottle from blowing out.

I would like to see the entirety of the bowl in focus, but that is the only thing I see that I don't like.

The good- The composition, colors, and DOF are good. The not so good- hot sauce makes for a boring photo and offers very little clues as to what it is. Food photos full of texture will create much more engagement and positive feedback. If you are trying to sell your skills, picking visually interesting food is the most important first step.

Would love some feedback on this. It is Hot Sauce in the bowl. [...]

Some good pointers given already.

On first viewing and without reading the text I thought this was a small cup of (tomato) soup. There is little to tell me that this is hot sauce, other than the out of focus peppercorns that aren't obvious enough to indicate the contents of the bowl is a hot sauce. Your arrangement is not normally how hot sauce is presented. Remember that you are also telling a story, not just conveying emotion for the food. The viewer should not be left wondering "what's in the bowl."

Consider placing some food item that will showcase the hot sauce in use (burrito?) somewhere in the scene but not the main focus. It will help tell the story that the contents of the bowl is to be used as a condiment. Place a small (non soup) spoon in the bowl or (better yet) have a hand drizzling the sauce onto the burrito in the background. That should help sell the product.

Technically, I love what you did with the lighting, the choice of color palette and composition. As for the depth of field... that's definitely subjective. Maybe shifted forward just a sliver could help strengthen the subject.

100% what Duck said. Especially the bit about it needing a context setting element to show that this is a condiment, not a bowl of soup (which is what I thought too).

Other than that issue I love the colours and the execution.

Chiefy, a few jalapeños would be a stronger hint than the peppercorns.

(Quickly taken photo, meaning I merely un-bagged my camera in a bar/restaurant. The 2nd image is merely a crop.)

OldCrow,

A neat story behind that burger image was that we were entertaining relatively young German interns, and they wanted to try some American food during their brief stay in the USA.
The 18yr old man who ordered that BBQ Burger DEVOURED it!
He will be talking about that one for some time to come.
My spouse & I were happy to have exposed him to this American Goodness.

At the restaurant, I was a bit awkward with my brick of a camera, especially in front of these three guests that we were entertaining and I was holding up the show.
In hindsight, I really wish I had turned the plate below so that the brisket was in the foreground of the image, but I suppose that means that we will have to go back and try it again!
