The Batis 135mm sharpness from wide open at f/2.8 is insane. It's a "slow" 135mm lens, but Zeiss did it right by making it amazing right from 2.8.

both of these look great, but I am seeing a little bit of a purple tint to the pine tree trunks...

Agree. I think from the Tiffen Vari ND. I'll get it fixed...thanks for pointing out.

EDIT: Updated the image - used a HSL Adj layer to desaturate Magentas...seems to have fixed it.

From my 3 shoots this weekend. Most of the stuff I get paid to shoot isn't super interesting or sexy, but I always manage to capture a few that I'm proud of and its always gratifying. Plus there are people out there willing to pay good money to photograph just about anything these days.

On another note, I clocked 1,600 shots over the course of 4 hours before the a9 battery dropped below 10%. Good stuff, but I need to pick up some more batteries eventually.

More thoughts on the a9....one thing that stands out about the AF system is how it seems to maintain focus lock between exposures even in single shot mode. Either the AF system can stick to the subject when the shutter closes or it acquires focus so fast you can't tell. Either way its always primed to take the next shot immediately which means you're capturing more key moments.

Secondly...the 24-70II acts like its mounted to a native DSLR on the a9. No issues what-so ever.

Thank you! Really loving my Batis 135mm...starting to feel it might not be overpriced after all (got mine used for less though). :)

I was trying very hard to avoid wanting the 135. 135 is the one FL I am still missing. Still hoping Sony comes up with their own 135. But your ringing endorsment of the Batis is not helping...
Specially since I love my B18 and B25.

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.

So, you need to hear something bad about it to keep GAS in check. :) So here is my lone criticism of the Batis 135mm: It has cat eye bokeh balls, which can give the bokeh a swirly quality. It's the same thing Travis has objected to regarding the FE 50mm 1.4. Can't have everything!

What I do get in the Batis 135mm is super-sharp CA-free images and the lens is still lightweight and small enough to easily fit in my little lens bags (Urban Approach 5 and 10) along with two or three other lenses. The portability (the weight) of the Batis lenses is why I'm stuck on them.

I have tried 135mm f/2 (Zeiss DSLR lens), but it was just too heavy to carry it with other lenses, so it didn't get much use. Sold it Same with typical 70-200s. Great lenses (Sony and Canon), but even the little f/4 zooms are too long and heavy for my shooting enjoyment. Batis 135mm is my Goldilocks medium telephoto...just right. I'll be using the heck out of it, just like the other three Batis lenses.

I rarely do this but here is the original RAW image. I wanted to see how far I could take a single exposure to try achieve a fairly natural final image using mostly LR CC.

Love it Travis! You're right about this ultra wide FoV. You filled the frame with all the right elements to arrive at a compelling image.

Thanks...I just could not get the whole scene in with any other lens...even the pano lost some of the huge scale of the clouds...I was really glad the CV12 made the hike up with me.

1. Not going to get tired of these.
2. I just love the way the CV ultrawides render. The new FE 12-24mm may be a bit sharper in corners, but I prefer the rendering of the CVs. And it's plenty sharp.
3. I love all that's going on in the photo. It's like a whole novel in one shot: one chapter is about that blue-hued mountain range off to the right, another is about the majestic stone on the bald with its crown of rhododendrons. And then there's the epic concluding chapter in that glorious sunset. Wonderful imagery.

One of these days I've got to go where the real landscapes are to be had. Wating for summer heat to die off, so I can get out on some camp trips.

Glad you don't get tired of them either...I only have one more edit, a portrait orientation...
It is certainly a full composition...which sometimes I like, it allows the viewer to linger on it...I can't wait to see this one on metal very soon for our annual show...

The great thing about Roan...in June, its wonderful up there. Not hot and miserable like ATL...

it really is amazing what is possible...I think I have had to blend one or two images in the 19 months I have been shooting Sony...it has really made the workflow much easier and less time consuming. Great shot BTW, love the little hints of color in the sky.
