The amount you pay will depend on where you live, if you live in New York then you need to add 8.875% in combined taxes. You, in BC, pay 12% in combined taxes - an additional 3.125% The exchange rate between CND and USD is ~0.79:1.

Of course you might live in a lower tax area but you might live in a higher tax one also. Either way there it's not going to add up to a $400 difference. Unless you count CND and USD at the same value which they are not even close to being.

I have to pay 23% Tax here in Ireland on goods. The XF 56mm is €999 inc Tax here (€812 without). So I have the best value off all three if you are counting currencies on par that is - oh lucky me.

Also, you can't make direct comparisons unless tax in each country is used in exactly the same way. Spending power may be higher in the US, but they also have to pay health insurance, high interest student loans etc. Here in the UK, yes we have 20% VAT, but I could live in hospital and not build up crazy debt.

In my case, I just wait until I visit my in-laws in Oregon, USA where there's no sales tax :D

Win win!

It used to be win win win before the exchange rate plummeted after the referendum!

OUCH!! For me to buy from B&H the 56mm is 1119 USD including customs = 1419.24 CDN + 12% = 1589.54 CDN. It's actually cheaper for a Canadian to buy a new 56mm lens on Canadian soil. Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in Canada to live! Considering cost of living and wages here in Canada relatively speaking I think a lot of folks around the world pay substantially more on camera gear.

€999 to CDN = 1488.14 Canadian Dollar

Regardless it's relatively cheap to buy camera gear in the US if you live there even when you consider wages and cost of living. My home is "only" about 1.8+ million dollars for an average home in Vancouver :O The 5dmk4 on sale including taxes is only 4949 CDN LOL!!! 5dmk4 is $3299USD which is cheap considering a Canadian will pay $2599 for a much inferior 6dmk2 before tax.

It's much easier to be a camera gear whore in the US :P

In studio, if you are using lights, there is a good case for one alright as you can't 'see' the exposure in the EVF as you might normally do. In that way a meter could be handy I've just never hankered after one but, for now, I feel its one more thing to have to deal with.

Over your next few shots write down your settings with a rough diagram of your set up including, modifiers, flash power etc... & distances. I bet you'll see a pattern in there that you will recognise quickly.

This is pretty much what I do. I have a small little leather notebook I jot down my final settings so I can refer back to them later.

BH Photo will ship you one cleared for $1200USD, that includes all tax. Shipping is free and they only charge £1 for brokerage. That $1200 includes your GST & PST, BTW, yes still cheaper to buy local at $1395CND.

Not use to having to add the tax when buying here although we do get to claim any tax we pay back if the is item for business use - so that's a little like buying at 0% tax. Nice that.

I've been shooting with my Canon FD 50mm f1.4 mounted on my X-e2 a lot these past two days and I enjoy using it more than my Fuji 50mm F2. I think over the years I've just become more comfortable with manual focus lenses so it feels more comfortable to me.

MF 50mm is my current solution for my portrait prime needs, but I'm like, 80% sure I'll end up with a 60mm in my bag before long :)

One of these was an out of the camera JPEG and one was processed in LR and I honestly can't remember which is which
