I think this is a great shot, especially the close up. He definitely looks like a poet or some creative type. The fact that you threw the background out of focus really helps the shot in my opinion. Great job.

#1 is the winner, but the background by his right ear, especially the dark oblong shape, bothers me.

#2 would be a great shot if he looked like he was thinking deeply. As it is he looks like his piles are hurting. I would certainly try that again but go for a more relaxed/contemplative expression.
